Well we know chapter 5 is when elsepth is gonna find/meet Urabrask but what’s gonna happen
will she hear him and maybe tezzeret out despite her hatered/fear to phyrexians and tezzeret and her had bad history
Or will she just go onslaught
Second elspeth did something ridiculously dangerous and she doesn't know it.
Leaving Giada with vivien… because she could bring her to Urabrask since it’s the cabaretti's suposive infinite halo source.
Great points here! Combine that with the in-episode speculation that Halo was developed to fight Phyrexians vs. Halo's most apparent effects on consumers being merely to enhance their magical abilities and mood, and now I'm curious how well Urabrask can drink Halo...maybe he might even get healed by the Halo instead of the in-episode speculation that he might get hurt?
And if Urabrask gets healed by Halo, and he and Giada get anywhere near each other...
But she didn't yet know why Urabrask wanted it. Just holding it seemed to cause him to wince.
he thinks it hurts him so that’s why he studying it to use it as poison for elesh norn and the other praetors and factions besides his own phyrexians and realm (and at the same time finding and studying old phyrexians on the plane to gain advantage norn and the other factions don't have)
The danger is he could drain Giada remaining halo in her causing her to die to get what he needs for his study’s to beat elesh norn (Urabrask is still a villain deep down and is willing to do whatever it takes to get rid of elesh norn)
Mob Nixilis literally just come and toppled the rule of five families built over centuries, and the families couldn't even prevent, hinder, or defend themselves from his undermining? If he's taking Capenna by brute force, then I can understand how the families would have trouble fighting him, but Mob beat five families from scratch, in a GANGSTER game, all at once. Huh?
I'm not partial to modern MtG stories where PWs just swoop in and alter the world structure at will, and done so with such ease. It's far more interesting to read about how residents of each plane solve their own crisis, instead of having foreigners descend like some Hollywood heroes/villains, while the natives remain helpless audience. The side stories are so much better than ones with PWs in it.
And writers should really learn that showing is always better than telling. Unveil a character trait with gestures, mood, expressions, little talks, is better than writing it all out like a wikipedia entry.
This has been a routine complaint from me regarding the lore, so naturally I agree. Leading legends on a plane that evidently repelled original Phyrexia no less.
It’s a cheap method to reduce the lore to the least common denominator. Planeswalkers. Eliminate elements that actually confer some identity and interest in a plane, relegating it to nothing more than a backdrop or setting for the same recurring characters we can (and do) see everywhere already, so that nothing else stands out. Really robs the lore of any flavor, stakes and dimension.
“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
Oof, the most recent main story really felt like a nosedive quality-wise.
The Crescendo, played up as this super-awesome event ... could've been any random party.
Elspeth suddenly cares for Giada like they spent months together, despite just having met (on what feels like) yesterday.
We had like, one scene of Ob scheming and well ... here he is, having done all the undermining and intriguing off-screen.
Satisfying plot development, this is not.
Yes, I know this is a long-standing complaint that's not likely to be addressed, but everything that happened here would have been much more impactful if we had had more time with the characters.
This issues will likely never change and if that really is botherer some you can just leave the vorothos side.
If you like MtG worldbuilding and are saddened by the fact that the setting/story doesn't get explored more deeply, you should leave the place for the people who care about the setting/story? This is a weird take dude
If he/she is not, he/she should be. What do you expect to achieve with this post?
And yeah, the main problem just persisnt along several sets. Kaldheim, Strixhaven....a nice buildup with a rushed, incoherent pacing in the end, world-changing events happening along several paragraphs...
And in the meantime, rich and great side-stories.
Unless they change the time/space allocated to the main story (5-6 short stories is just not enough, period - especially for a new world), this, alas, won't change.

I understand, and even sort of agree that it would have been great to see how Ob Nixilis went about undermining everything, but at the same time, they aren't writing full novels here. They don't have the time to get into every grimy detail, no matter how much we might like it. Especially since we're still relatively unsure of the actual timeline of when these get written. (If they were written years ago, in the middle of set development, then there was still stuff being hashed out; if they were written months ago, the settled details were no longer fresh, and being handled in the middle of working on the worldbuilding for whatever set is out three years from now.)
But, I mean, he's a demon, and like, a proper demon, who came into the city while the gangs were noticeably on edge and working against each other more than usual, and he's sort of got a thing for conquering worlds and making pacts with demons...it's not too surprising that he accomplished what he did.
As for Giada, I think it's fairly understandable for Elspeth to deeply care about someone in obvious pain and isolation. She's kind of the Queen of that.
The side stories are wonderful though. Without having story beats that need to be hit, they can really lay out a nice tableau of the city.
And halo is infact what was used to defeat the phyrexians on this plane
and the ending is how “Dominaria United” comes in elsepth and vivien go there after vivien told her what Urabrask told her and took Xanders secret stash of Halo.
So already looking promising to say..WE ARE GOING TO WAR!

Well, kinda expected that there WON'T be ANOTHER compleated Walker. "Dominaria United" is definitely the start of the upcoming battle between the Phyrexians of New Phyrexia and the "Free" Planes. And seeing ALL the Charms suggest that we MIGHT have another "War of the Spark" set where there would be a good number of Planeswalkers since the charms all YEET a planeswalker in some way and I can assume that some of those walkers would be "Compleated"
Overall the story was nice, too bad Falco Spadra, Raffine and Ziatora didn't play a part in the story.
Nice to see the gatewatch side getting a win in after Tamiyo getting compleated with Elspeth and Vivien bring back Halo and info of Urabrask starting a revolt as well as 2 more walkers now getting into the war with the gatewatch and Karn.
I'm guessing Ajani and Karn will be in Dominaria and likely will be about them and the others making their move on to Phyrexia.

NGL, this could really have used one or two more installments to flesh the story out, because the end seemed EXTREMELY rushed and the epilogue tacked on.
The side stories have all been miles and miles ahead of the canon storyline in terms of quality. Would it really be so bad if we got to just enjoy the setting and its inhabitants without having to follow everyone's favorite planeswalkers around constantly?
Huh, so Giada is heavily implied to be a young full angel instead of a part-angel Aasimar Nephilim who's been hiding her wings all along. And Vivien actually doesn't drag Giada to Urabrask. And any indications that Giada and Elspeth are members of the same race (made explicit in one Episode 5 picture) are actually indications that Giada just opts to look like a member of Elspeth's race.
On the other hand, everyone who speculated about an angel in a torture chamber leaking Halo is at least mostly correct: it's even implied that the angels whose bodies are converted into Halo die in the process, which would explain why Halo is in limited supply!
My soul is ready for the Urabrask-Lost Travolta memes.
They do this flashback narration trick with Elspeth's stories to summarise her adventures up to that point. They did it back in our first Theros trip and now with Ajani. I guess they will show us her meeting with Urabrask as a flashback just before or during the Dominaria United storyline.
Though, i don't believe this is the end of him. We have yet to read the Rivetter substory. Given the flavor similarities between the jund faction and the quiet furnace, it is very likely he will be included.
Third, there is a chance the narration team has yet to decide about him. Yes, he is an enemy of Norn, but his role in the grand scenery is a mistery. My personal opinion is that he will not be a villain, nor a hidden true villain because it is not in the temperament of Red philosophy. I hope he will be a Liliana type of character. Perhaps he will become a walker (I know he is soulless but a man can dream), since he has been quite a likeable and intriguing character, despite so few appearances.
Also, no red walker for a second set in row?
All in all, i liked Vivien more than Elspeth and i am bored of omnivillain Mob Nixilis. Tibalt at least has marvelous wardrobe. We never got to know the angel girl with the rushed pacing.
I brought up the concern precisely based on Capenna story, on how Mob Nixilis just steamrolled everyone with such ease, while leaving the readers to wonder how he did it. They could've mention more of Mob's strategies and actions taken during side stories, even just a line or two in each, so it could be more convincing and build up for the finale, rather than a sudden result dropped on our eyes.
And for a MtG gangster noir, Capenna spent too much time on friendship, family, and youthful dialogues. People of different identities battling one big evil? It feels like a walk in Disneyland, too much harmony and goodwill for a plane designed to express a fantastical mobster story. Adding bloodshed doesn't automatically makes a mob story, there needs to be tragedy, failure, high hope and shattered dreams. For example, I was hoping Anhelo would fail to attend his daughter's wedding, because it'd create conflicts within and without his personal life, and a person's struggle is what adds depth to him. Anhelo being a senior gang member, right-hand man of boss Xander, shrunk his business time from 15 min to 5 min because his daughter complained. Not convincing.
The same goes with Kitt and other character, with exception of Perrie because he actually put something critical to his "being" on the line, and in the end still have to give up something he adored to make everyone happy.
I believe we were promised a planeswalker's guide, nowhere to be seen.
Damn, WOTC really dropped the ball these past three days.
I recall the Planeswalker's guide to Neo Kamigawa being released much later than the stories - maybe around the same time they promoted the manga? I'd wait until a little after New Capenna previews are over to shout at Wizards for no Planeswalker's guide.
They clarified that Urabrask wants compleation to be a choice and doesn't believe that everyone and anyone should be compleated like the other four factions want to do.
EDIT: The creative member noted that after Norn is gone that neither Tezzeret nor Urabrask are truly friend and Urabrask dose still want to spread and perfect Phyrexia just in his own way.
All the family heads where alive and around at the time of New Capenna being built when they made their arch-demon deals.
Falco is the youngest of the families head and was a young law student in the kingdom era. Very charismatic and wanting to challenge the old guard of lawyers he was kicked out of school but had gathered a group of followers. Falco also helped with making the laws of New Capenna as it was being built. He made his deal with the archdemon since the demon liked Flaco's brilliant mind and Flaco had a huge amount of followers. Falco got the best deal due to his mind but all the deals have a bit of bite to them cause demon deals. Falco like the rest, was turned into a demon is slowly losing his core "humanity" to his demon side twisting his actions.
Raffine and Ziatora are the oldest demon heads. Raffine was around when Old Phyrexia invaded and thought herself as a instrument of fate when really she was not that great of a seer. Raffine made her deal in order to get true sight into the future but it comes out in floods of visions (since demons deals) the rest of the family help try to help figure them out.
Xander was originally human and an ailing artist from a dying noble house. His deals made him a vampire as a well as a demon and vampires (or at least the ones we seen now) from the plane came from Xanders deals.
The creative member kinda let slip that Giada is still around after the end of the story but caught himself from saying more since it seems it might come up in the future with Elspeth.
Ziatora was a thrill seeking berserker in Old Capenna. When the city was being build an archdemon offered her army as part of her deals and she happy signed. The twist is the army the demon gave her was the people she used to terrorize and prey on (mostly aristans, blacksmiths and peasants) and part of her deals made so she had to be a be a sincere leader. Since she has been filled with a demonic rage that leaks out into the followers. The family makes up 1/3 of the city.
Nothing of note is really left of the plane outsider of the city so for short hand New Capenna is the name of the plane that creative uses.
The families allow a civil government to run to give a sense of order and to handle some of the minor day to day stuff like trash removal and keeping the power grids on but the government is basically filled in the pockets of all the families with the cabaretti having the biggest hold on them.
Jetmir is on the younger side of the family heads and is seen as the grandfather to the family. Jetmir was a paladin from a might leonin family who after being disgraced went and became a druid. He built a following with his charisma and "have no fear lets just party" kinda of attitude when he made his deals it gave him that made those aspects bigger so people are always wanting to follow him letting make his perfect cult/family he always wanted.

Not gonna lie: reading Elspeth's fight with Mob Nix had me humming "you got the touch" after she got the macguffin sword and started winning the fight...
Metropolis Angel. I suppose the Halo drought would end up with five families hunting for angels.
So apparently the Angels came back at the end of the events in this set, despite story 5 ending with mere speculation on Elspeth's part.
There's rushing a story's plot, and then there's just not finishing it. This one is definitely the latter. I'd love to know how this was planned ... it sure feels like stories 1-3 were already done when the angels were added in and they couldn't change much last minute.
Its always kind of baffling when these kind of things happen, especially since WotC has had so many opportunities to learn (i.e. failed attempts). They just can't get it right it seems.
Creative most be screwing on purpose: one set is gold tier (i.e. Neon Dynasty) the next is storyline garbage. There's literally no logical reasons for there to still be a disconnect when they continuously hire people who care like Ethan
Forgot to go back to it but there is a lot nice lore in the after stream from last week and a sneak peek to the planeswalker guide which are getting art some point; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WIv0ovvLCw&t=840s
Updated the original post on it.
The story kinda hinted the angels might return but wish that had been more clear in the story, but seem this is confirmed by Soul of Emancipation.

what Happened to Urabrask? Did he leave heck he never got a chance to talk to elspeth
All she got is a name drop of him (could be wrong be elspeth might trust Urabrask and understands him based on choice of words.)
