New to the forum, so if this needs to be posted elsewhere, let me know.
But yea, I've missed out on some lore and have been getting back into the newer sets and current storylines. However I noticed something which struck me as odd that I cannot find an explanation to really. I was looking up lore on Plainswalkers and notice that, for instance, Davriel Cane has gone from Black color alignment, to currently, Blue/Black. As well as Sarkhan Vol has gone from Red aligned, to loosing Black and gaining Green and Blue?
Is this something explained in lore that I've missed? Is there a simple explanation, because it seems like something that would be worth mentioning, for example on a wiki. But, I haven't found anything explaining why.
The basic idea is that characters (like Humans) change over time. They're dynamic.
The other basic idea (I think) is that just like *US* players, Planeswalkers don't really on a single school of Magic. We all have different colored decks, etc. They probably do too...they live in this world, after all. I don't think this has ever been established officially by R&D but it seems reasonable enough to me.
You'll see PW's that are "grounded" in a color or color pair or wedge (usually the colors they were at first introduction) but over time, they'll play with it.
They're also used to balance things out in sets. It feels a little forced sometimes but R&D wants all five colors to be represented through at least one Planeswalker in every set. If any colors are missing, they'll often repurpose a previous PW character and just nudge their color focus a bit to make sure it's all balanced. (And then come up with a flavor/storyline justification for the color shift after the fact and (feels like) sometimes they don't even do that!)
In general each planeswalker is based off a specific color. This embodies the core motivations/personality.
However, as noted by the previous commenter people constantly changed. So sometimes motivations get more complex or change altogether or there are specific moments in time when you're not truly yourself. Hence more colors.

Small note, its not per set they want to keep balance but standard overall. Having per set (and in the before times each block) helps but as we just saw with Kamigawa have 3/4 walkers in U they can let sets have an unbalanced number of walkers per color if they know next set will help balance it out.
