Hey, is nobody talking about the latest MTG comic book? I was wondering what everyone thought about bringing back Marit Lage, and how these stories affect the rest of MTG continuity (if at all.)
The storyline for this new comic actually isn't bad. The Planeswalker leaders on Ravnica have to put aside their differences and deal with a threat to the Guildpact. they find out via Jaya and Teferi that Marit Lage has something to do with it.
They ran a nice backstory of what Happened to Lage at the end of the Ice Age. ties up a couple of loose ends in the lore and asks why we never heard of Lage after the Thaw.
Oh and Tezz is up to something in the book too.

I'm curious where we can learn more about these details concerning Marit Lage? Also, is this canon?
I am very interested in Marit Lage. Among my favorite characters.
They better do Marit Lage right. I don't want any Ulamog/Kozilek Deus Ex Machina nonsense here. No "but planeswalkers!" or "but Ravnica!" crap. DREAD MARIT LAGE ALWAYS WINS
In all honesty, that's actually been a pretty good read thus far. Better than most of War of the Spark, really.
Mostly agreed. I only don't like that Marit Lage was imprisoned in the Ronom Glacier as soon as she arrived, since it's clearly stated she and her followers wreaked havoc on Dominaria before she was presumably defeated and sealed. Becoming trapped on arrival just seems silly for a being of such immense power. I hope they go the Emrakul route with Marit Lage and realize she cannot be defeated, only avoided for a time. Seems that way thus far, as even Oldwalker Jaya stood no chance.
I have to second the notion that the story is kinda nice. (For a Magic story that is, let's be honest here.) It suffers from the typical problem that every character is a quippy quipster, but whatever. I've learned not to expect too much from dialog in comics.
I really loved the twist with House Dimir. I did not see that one coming at all.
My only complaint is that they chose Ravnica as a site of conflict. Like, I don't think they want to do another non-guild set on Ravnica, which would be needed if they wanted to show this conflict in the cards. But on the other hand, showing the return of Marit Lage only in a comic and not in the cards is enormously disappointing, in my opinion.

Considering how a lot of time fans have asked about Marit Lage they have said something to the tune of "we have the eldrazi to use in this story space instead" I think they don't have any plans to use her in the main storyline and thats why she's even being used in the comic.

In that case they should've just gone ahead and make Marit Lage an eldrazi scion similar to Brisela, but one that has grown strong enough to traverse the blind eternities itself. Then, instead of infringing on the eldrazi's territory, it would be another addition to the roster.

Ah whatever.
Marit Lage is too interesting to be associated with the Eldrazi.
While I do admire this comic storyline, I'd prefer it not to become canon. Marit Lage specifically wreaked havoc on Dominaria before being imprisoned in the ice, and possibly defeated. I preferred it that way - the mystery of how such a powerful demigod could be imprisoned in ice. This concept of manifesting in a glacier from the blind eternities and becoming trapped by something physical is ridiculous. Also, if this storyline is going to devolve into "Ravnica is great because marketing! And Planeswalkers are even better! Because PLANESWALKERS!" as I already suspect will occur, I'm writing off MTG comics for good. Marit Lage is superior to Eldrazi, Bolas, and all that other trash. Also, having Tezzeret behind plotting her release already irks me, because it reminds me of Bolas and the Eldrazi on Zendikar, and this concept of Planeswalker machinations involving beings that should be greater than they are, but that subpar writing and myopic creative relegate to secondary roles relative to inferior characters has worn my Vorthos card into pulp.
EDIT: I will note, however, that SOI and Emrakul were examples of storylines and villains done right, respectively. That is how Marit Lage should be handled.

Of all stupid decisions Creative has made, this is on the top dumbest
Marit Lage is a long beloved character by fans AND rather distinct from the Eldrazi. This is not an Ulgrotha/Innistrad situation where the formed was so hated it required replacement; this is open waste of potential.
Marit Lage is too interesting to be associated with the Eldrazi.
I fundamentally disagree with the notion that any single narrative element can be too interesting not to intersect with the worldbuilding as a whole to create a coherent and rich setting.
Ignoring uninteresting stuff out of existence is what led Wizards to stuff Ulgotha and Kamigawa away in the basement for decades. I wouldn't say it made Magic any richer by cutting off parts, rather than revisiting them and making them interesting.

I somewhat agree in that magic is so big I can believe in there are more eldritch horror things running around, I think the biggest factor here is Marit Lage was a minor "ooo isn't this mysteries" thing they had in ice age were as the eldrazi are more developed for both a lore and a mechanical/card theme.
Granted one thing for all of to keep in mind is magic story telling runs on rule of cool and rule of popularity as well as creative being a shifting every changing team, how they feel now might change. If this comic is popular and such they might consider having Marit show up in the main canon.

So the new issue is out and it essentially sets Lage up as a looming bigbad planar threat specifically tied to Jace. Lage is in his head now and he seems to be like a beacon of some sorts. Maybe like a silver surfer/galactus thing? Maybe i'm reaching. But it would be interesting to see them explore that on future jace cards.
Also, one of you called it: tezz had something to do with Lage targeting ravnica and jace. Similar to what bolas did with the eldrazi. Because master plan, or something.

Interesting. Doesn't seem to be online yet, but I am looking forward to it. Hope they did Marit Lage right. The connection with Jace is a promising story beat that I also hope they employ. But I'd prefer to follow up with Jace and his past on Vryn first

Since Niv-Mizzet is a mizzium metal dragon there, no, it is not canon.

Bummer. They went out of their way to reference past events, too.
In any case, two more issues are out. One is dedicated to Tezz and what he has going on. Basically he's going from plane to plane setting up his master plan, because master plan. Nothing we haven't seen from him before, just now he doesn't have Bolas looming ovee his shoulder anymore.
The other story has the guild leaders assemble an all-star lineup of PWs to help them lure Lage to Amonkhet to trap her there with an unlimited supply of zombies commanded to worship her. And when you think zombies, that means Lili, whom Jace kinda just finds out of the blue with no mention of Strixhaven. Big disconnect there.
I do like a discussion Teferi and Karn have with the others about trying to lure Lage to New Phyrexia, and what would happen if she was compleated there.

Do the new issues appear online anywhere? Lage on Amonkhet seems odd, you'd think she would be lured to an icy plane. Frankly, Lage should outrank New Phyrexia and I highly doubt she'd be compleated. She's a multiverse-level demigod. I'm pleased this nonsense isn't canon.

Why would it make more sense for her to be lured to an icy plane? My understanding of the Marit Lage history may be off, but I didn't think there was anything inherently ice-related about her, just that she ended up getting trapped in ice when she came to Dominaria. I get that all we know we really knew about her outside the Boom comics was that she was trapped in the ice, but unless I'm missing something I don't really see why luring her to an icy plane would make more sense than Amonkhet.
