I'm super excited for the next set and figured I'd start the thread for the story of Eldraine early to speculate on the story and the world.
Main story
While it might be a mundane such as Rowan having better art/design (looking like warrior mage red riding hood) its worth noting that Will isn't in the art with her and we been told a bunch that they go together. From a planeswalker calendar we got a mini bio saying the two even share a spark so it might be both are needed to be together to planes walk. It might be Rowan and Will returned home and someone/something has got Will and the story is Rowan going to save him.
Speaking of Maro has said there is a new walker character in the set who may be our villain for the story.
The event of this set also likely parallel the time frame of War of the Spark which would explain why Will, Rowan and the new walker character didn't show up to it. Maro has also noted that Will and Rowan where made for Eldraine and later added to Battlebond since they fit for partner walkers.
The World
Hard to tell what kind of races since the source material was very human centric. So far we have see merfolk and faeries as well as maybe Hags and Gobins. (for my own fairy tale set I did go with hags for the black characteristic). While the merfolk might be a one off, they already been blues go to blue race as well as I believe the lady of the lady art also being a merfolk.
From the Gingerbread house and the forest art its seems like "witches" normal live in the woods.
I would also except an Arthur character as well as his knights. From the pic of the round table we have I notice we had 5 knights and magic dose like its cycles, though I'd rather get princesses than knights.

Any news on if or how were going to get a story for this set? The next novel is still war of the spark so I don't expect them to start up the next multi year storyline here but I'm beginning to fear we're going to get nothing story wise for this set.

That is far more than I could have hoped for. At least we get a real story as opposed to wondering how the story plays out. And we get it before the set spoils the entire plot. I don't' know how to handle actual excitement for magic story. It's all just kind of been yah there's a story and it ranges from awesome and interesting but I already knew what as going to happen before the story came out; to oh god why did they allow this person to do this.
“The exciting new story of Magic’s latest release, Throne of Eldraine. The young warrior-mage twins Rowan and Will Kenrith quest for their missing father, the High King. Rowan and Will’s powers are strong, but the world of Eldraine is a dangerous place! A thrilling mashup of Arthurian legend and Grimm’s fairy tales seen through the unique lens of Magic: The Gathering, here you will find magic, monsters, and mystery true to both traditions.”
So looks like Princess Rowan and Prince Will are the kids of the king Arthur equivalent of Eldraine who is missing. Since he's gone it might mean Will or Rowan are up for the crown.
Theory time : Will is the older twin and is staying behind at court to try and play “game of thrones” while Rowan travels out to look for their father. Feels in color for both as well to do these jobs.

I think Eldraine will be two sets, otherwise I think Will would be printed in thrones. I like @5colors theory that Will is staying behind to hold the throne while Rowan looks for the High King. Set 1 will be heavier on the fairy tale theme as it depicts Rowan's journey through fantastical lands.
Set 2 I think something bad will happen. Either a close ally betrays Will or Will himself is manipulated to take the throne by being led to believe the High King is dead. In any case, there is a betrayal because we need some Mordred figure. Rowan returns with the High King to reestablish the status quo but him end up dying in the final conflict.
About Rowan and Will, I think either one of then will end up dying or the story ends with both parting ways. Reason is that I think both will be beloved characters and WotC will want to keep then around. However printing both whenever one shows up could be too restrictive. Hopefully both stays as they are both very refreshing take on planeswalkers, specially Will who is a mono-blue matial type.
About the colors, I think they will be broken in the two main themes. Eldraine Kingdom (Arthurian) is WUR colored and centered in white, reflecting the High King W, Rowan R and Will U.
The wilds (Grimm) are BG colored because "dark woods" is such a prevalent trope there and as @5colors brought up, from the released art we can already see 'woods witch' theme going on. I'm saying we will not get WUR Grimm characters or BG Arthurian as I believe the color separation will be soft (like most sets), not hard (like Alara, Ixalan or Ravnica).
Another argument for that is that how good and evil is usually portrayed in fairy tales. The most common virtues such as honesty, humbleness, ingenuity, independence and laboriousness are closer to WUR. On the other hand villains are dominated by their basic instincts of hunger, lust and vanity which fits BG more.
The other color combos will probably portray the border/overlap between those two main themes, such as WG, RG and UG outskirts villagers or WB/UB court villains.
logical-strix asked: You revealed that the marketing art character is a planeswalker we've seen before whose home plane is Eldraine. Is that Kasmina in the red hood? Did she change her hair color?
A: It’s Rowan. She and Will are from Eldraine.
achillesandtortoise asked: were Will & Rowan originally created for Battlebond or Eldraine?
A: They were first created for Throne of Eldraine. Then Battlebond was looking for planeswalkers with partner and we were like, “we have twin planeswalkers”.
thoalmighty asked: It’s great that we get to see the Kenrith’s home plane, but it admittedly feels odd seeing Rowan but not Will. Are you able to tell us whether Will is in the set or where he is if he is not?
A: Will’s in the set.
mirronx asked: Hey, is Will a Planeswalker in the set? Lots of people seem to think he is going to be a Creature instead, conformation would be nice.
A: Will is still a planeswalker. He hasn’t gotten demoted or anything. : )
gabecampos89 asked: Is the third planeswalker from Throne of Eldraine (which looks amazing btw), someone we know or a new character?
A:There is a planeswalker in Throne of Eldraine that is a brand new character:
trevorstrnad asked: will eldrain have 3 sets (like the recent guilds of ravnica "block")? would be kinda sad if a new plane will only be featured in one set
A: Eldraine is just featured in one set. Baseball (the codename of the next set) will be on a different plane.
So the planeswalkers will be Rowan, Will and someone new.
Another fun fact for Eldraine;
hoardeofcats asked: Birthday trivia! I've missed the last few years of these but finally remembered this time. I love faeries, and am excited for Throne of Eldraine; can you say yet what's one distinct thing about Eldraine faeries that differs from those of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor/Dominaria/Ravnica/etc.?
The color mix is a little different than previous Faerie-centric sets.
Happy Birthday!
My thinking (from my own thoughts when making a fan set with the same flavor): W- Fairy Godmother types who bless the good and punish the bad. Might replace angles as well as be "big" fairies that are human sized. U- mix of trickster sprits and wise fairy tropes (maybe a tinker bell that gives everything flying). As the Faerie type is based in blue I think this where we will still see most of them. B/R- I think we'd maybe see a few as emotion driven and/or dark fairy godmother. Maybe a few G ones for nature fairies BUT mtg faeries are very tied to having flying would be hard to fit a lot mono-green flyers. Similar to spirits on Innistrad, I could see them in all five colors but centers in WU for this world (and play with the flying theme in M20). Whats everyone else thoughts?

Damn, one set feels really small. The clue I get from that is that Throne's story does not involve the world going through major changes as that is the only plot element that absolutely requires multiple sets.
I stand behind my speculation, however: Rowan goes on a journey to find the High King, Will stays behind to secure the throne, Will is betrayed or led to betrayal, the throne falls into the villain hands, Rowan returns to restore the status quo but the High King dies or is already dead. The set itself will portray Rowan's journey and return, the usurper in power and the restoration.

Agree, I too expect UW faeries and probably some R ones. I don't expect fairy tribal, I think they will be a tribe attached to certain mechanical theme such as enchantments or blinking.
I think we may see black and green fairies but those will be more of an exception. Green flying fairies can be done by giving then defender, which is also justified in flavor (generally nature faeries are portrayed as avoiding crowded places and only found by children in deep forests and such).

count me in. This sounds amazing, I’m really on board with this setup for the story and can’t wait to read this and see the cards
After finding that there's a High King and he goes missing, who else is getting a strong Fisher King vibe from him? I have a bad feeling that, when he comes back or is found, he's injured and Eldraine becomes physically worse off because of this.
Alternately (or possibly this is the cause of his injury?), the High King may have gone missing because he decided to hunt a Questing Beast.
Who else also thinks that the Kenrith twins' stint in Kylem will figure into the plot? I can easily imagine them hearing the bad news about their father in Kylem, and I find it plausible that the High King went missing partially because his children were not there to watch over him and/or prevent him from following up on his own stupid ideas.

Would very much be in theme. The set name is focused on the throne so might be just needing a ruler in the throne in general.

As quoted above the twins where made for this set originally so might just be them walking in general.
I wonder if the King knows the two are walkers. Its been interesting see how since the gatewatch formed planeswalkers are becoming more common knowledge.

it is interesting how they gonna deal with knowledge of the existence of planeswalkers overall. Like since the mending ~100 years ago~ for some cultures the knowledgement of walkers could been gone.
previous the mending the knowledge of planeswalkers was kinda common acros the planes mostly when those people meet the most famous ones but not all of them introduced themselves as walkers and soo we can assume that some planes had no idea about walkers.
Also there is the metter of planes that had some kind of planar barriers like Kamigawa, Mirrodin, Ravnica, Ixalan, etc In those planes the knowledge of planeswalkers is or has become common pretty quick.
Imo in most planes without planar barriers or other significant ways to block walkers the knowledge about walkers should be common or at least known by their rulers. Soo imo the high king knows about planeswalkers but may not know that his son and daughter are walkers themselves and soo their vanish of the plane may be the reason the king “went mad” and left the throne looking for them, maybe he knew about a walker that had residency on the plane and went question it about them.

Green fairies won’t have flying, but might have reach. MaRo has talked about green’s inability to get small flyer’s (or flyers in general, which tbh I don’t really understand but w/e) that however doesn’t mean we won’t get green fairies, just that they won’t have flying.
Storywise, I see them as woodland spirits, tricksters and Leprechauns. Possibly creatures that lure unsuspecting people to their desths.
Glad that we can finally move past "is Will going to be part of the set".
Personally I think two things, 1) Rowan is more marketable. Her red riding hood knight outfit perfectly show the theme of grimm* fairy tales meets Arthurian myth and while they could do something similar with Will, most iconic fairy tale characters and symbols are often female/related to a female character and 2) as they where originally made for this set and previewed in battle bound, could be part of the marketing was gonna surprise/mini-twist us by showing us Rowan and they later reveling she has a twin.

I mean, I'm fine if Rowan gets the focus, but the amount of twists people went to trying to make it so Will wasn't in the set even with what Maro was saying was pretty ridiculous. "Maybe it's time travel, maybe he's dead, maybe it's a prequel, maybe he just didn't come".
Green could have flying and defender, mechanically that wotks almost like reach.
Not quite the place for this talk, but why would you want it if it's basically the same as Reach barring aesthetics? Green is fine with what it has.
Aesthetic and flavor is exactly the reason. Historically creatures that fly and won't attack are given flying and defender instead of reach (just look up there are dozens). Reach are for spiders or other ground creature who can somehow grab a flying creature.

"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
previous the mending the knowledge of planeswalkers was kinda common acros the planes mostly when those people meet the most famous ones but not all of them introduced themselves as walkers and soo we can assume that some planes had no idea about walkers.
And really looking forward to this. Glad that we can finally move past "is Will going to be part of the set".
I'm really curious to see what kind of twists they have for fairies. I really love them so more colors will be pleasant.

I know it is, it’s just an odd weakness is all
I mean, I'm fine if Rowan gets the focus, but the amount of twists people went to trying to make it so Will wasn't in the set even with what Maro was saying was pretty ridiculous. "Maybe it's time travel, maybe he's dead, maybe it's a prequel, maybe he just didn't come".
Eh, not really. It just means that Green needs to fight on the ground. They can still block with Reach.
