The set will have some story relevance, but more in a "filling in information of the past about relevant characters" way than telling a piece of the "present-day" story.
So, basically, more like retcon. Not necessarily bad, but you're more likely to notice when it's bad than when it's good. Sounds alright. Looks like we're getting Chandra, then, but who else?
A retcon is when they change something that was previously established. Not when they tell us details about things we kind of knew but not very well. That is called storytelling.
Chandra originally had no backstory and wore the iconic armor she always does.
Later on revealed she hailed from an unknown and nameless plane that wasn't Regatha.
Chandra's pyromancy abilities caused soldiers to burn down her village and family.
Chandra fled to Regatha and studied with the monks at Keral Keep Monastery.
She trained with Mother Luti at the monastery. Chandra's home plane was later revealed to be Indian Aetherpunk world of Kaladesh, she stuck out like a sore thumb since both parents are Indian.
Also revealed later was that she was to be executed before escaping to Regatha.
Also revealed later was that Chandra's mother is actually alive.
Chandra and Gideon had a romantic relationship.
Revealed later that Mother Luti was actually Jaya Ballard.
Revealed later that Gideon instead saw Chandra as a sibling than a romantic partner.
Now revealed she at some point in her life used a 'regulator' for her magic before becoming her adult self, but what happened to the regulator is unknown as it doesn't appear on her normal armor.
Now revealed she is actually a very prodigious summoner of elementals in addition to her known pyromancy rather than just a pyromancer who only shoots gouts of flames, however these summoning talents are neglected prior to this in her lore.
Chandra's backstory is several layers of Retroactive Continuity or "retconning" as its also known. Where they revised the backstory over and over and over. She gives the formerly amnesiac Jace a run for his money.
Her father is white and biracial people come in all shades of skin tones.

Wholly forgot the Flamecaller, thanks, bro But we have not seen her summoning the elementals in story,IIRC.
There was this weird period of time when literally all PWs did in the story was summon creatures. I remember back in the original Ravnica's book, there was this scene that saw Jace summon a fairy, only for it to be BRUTALLY MURDERED by Tezzeret's own summon (long story short, Tez was trying to beat an important lesson on the nature of planeswalkers into Jace's head). That same book saw Jace summon a drake and a sphinx, and Liliana got to summon a friggin' vampire of all things.
So yeah, back then everyone was a summoner, and so even Chandra got to summon the occasional fiery elemental, although yes, she was always more about going Human Torch on people. Summoning fiery elementals was more of Baltrice's cup of tea: you people do remember Baltrice, right?

Most of these are contrived, but not retcons. Her mother surviving and mother Luti revealed as Jaya Ballard certainly made the story feel like a cheap script, but again that doesn't make it a retcon.
Chandra's homeplane is an interesting story as her name pretty heavily implies an indian setting, but her character was made several years before Kaladesh (and Regatha) was thought up, which is why her appearance (in terms of clothing at least) seems to clash with her origins. If she had been made after the fact, then her design would reflect that, as it does with virtually every planeswalker who is introduced alongside their homeplane, like Saheeli, Huatli, Samut etc. The same problem applies to Gideon as well.
So uh... Chandra is officially the energetic, endearing, lovable face of the product now? Are we all supposed to pretend that one time when she killed innocent people with no provocation (TWICE!) never happened?
Yup, but I don't know what are you talking about... she is ever been a lovely person, don't let anyone tell you different! u.u

"To keep things 100, anything I state is an opinion and not intended to be a fact. Any and all suggestions I give are a 100% opinion. If you need further clarification take the conversation to a PM. I am not in the business of assuming things. I'm only interested in 1 business and that business serves 2 things, Cold L's and Hot Dub's."
I had come to this topic to talk about that very same card, as well. It's either implying that Sorin currently lives on Tarkir following the events of WAR, or they did mean to have this card be the Atarka warrior from the story, and having him mention Kolaghan instead was an oversight.
Random thought, but does anyone else get the feeling that Glint-Horn Buccaneer is from Dominaria? The coat matches Hurloon minotaurs and there is no record of native minotaurs on Ixalan (which isn't to say there are none, we only visited one continent in full and got a passing visit to a second).
The decoration on his horns and the fact that he lives on a ship might even be a reference to Tarngarth.

By the way, I thought Teyo was supposed to be the new face of the game. He was created explicitly for the novel to act like an introduction to readers unfamiliar with Magic, he is relatively young and a white PW, a good substitute for Gideon... But apparently they are trying again what they did in 2014... Wasn't Chandra the face of that core set too?
Nah, Teyo was never supposed to be the new face of the game. Making shields (even if they're cool geometrical glowy shields) and blocking things isn't the most exciting kind of power. From a marketing perspective, a woman with flames for hair is much more eye-catching.

Planeswalker decks aren’t cannon. Jace had a planeswalker deck where he teamed up with Merfolk for Ixalan and that never happened.

Ah ah! Yes, I was just exagerating. There are worse offendere in the "ignore characters' past" category.

Theory: it's neither. It's actually Angrath's plane!
