We know that Firemind's Research is a story spotlight card and if we look at the promo we might see why. I could be totally off, but it could be Bolas using his manipulations, like we saw in the M19 story to influence Niv, by acting like him talking to himself, tempting him.
I wondered if that card was a story spotlight yet I couldn’t figure out what it was trying to depict given that there was no flavour text and Niv’s experiments are often complicated and hard to describe even at best.

While I'm happy and thrilled at the prospect of TWO books to close out this storyline... if second book doesn't release until next fall, does that mean we're going to have to wait until fall 2019 to see how the story ends?

Kinda funny that they want to release another book, back when the only way to read the story was to buy a book, almost no one cared about the lore, now that people care they think people are going to actually spend money on the books, i'm guessing it's not going to go as they planned it, specially given how hard it is to find these books outside the US.

Maybe the story spotlight cards don't have numbers this time around or they nust removed the numbers from the digital spoiler to make the plot a little bit harder to anticilate?
Firemind's Research looks like a pretty early point in the story though, almost like an establishing shot of sorts. "Niv-Mizzet is doing research … what will he find?"

Both the original and promo versions of the art show some sort of illusion of Niv, Niv is always depicted as having a strong personality and ideals, i'm hoping that's enough to protect him from Bolas, if he turns out to become another puppet it would be quite anticlimactic IMO.

Bolas is gonna go all Darth Vader and reveal that he's Niv's father, I've been tellin' ya!
Then Niv's gonna find out what the B in UBR means when daddy Bolas stabs him in the back.
Firemind's Research is likely one of the earlier story highlight cards, given that we know from the Ixalan story that Jace was going to approach Niv about formulating a plan to stop/fight Bolas.
I just realized that the "geometrical" powers of the new walkers remind me of how spells were portrayed in the Ice Age comics, with colored geometrical shapes. Nice touch.
I like the new walker, though I wonder what exactly she will do. Not really complaining about a new female, though I wish we had less humans.
This is my main feeling on it as well. I don't really care that we're getting so many new female walkers, just... more humans? (my earlier "obligatory" comment was largely tongue-in-cheek.
Take Commander 2018: 1 male non-human, and 3 human females. Saheeli is an existing character, so she's fine. Aminatou I guess they had a specific sort of picture in mind of, cool. Estrid... was there ANY reason Estrid couldn't have been ANY other species? (For the record, the Estrid deck was/is the one that appealed to me the most, but I find Estrid herself incredibly bland and like both of the other Bant generals better than her. Being non-human would have made her more interesting to me.)
Isn’t project Lightning Bug the thing Bolas is after? Ravnica being the center of the multiverse makes for a good place to track and trap walkers.
After all this is Done though, I wouldn’t be suprised if this is only about finding and trapping Ugin for Bolas. It would, from Bolas’s perspective accomplish several things:
- trap the only creature he knows of that can potentially rival Bolas himself in power.
- do to Ugin what Ugin planned to do to Bolas: the ultimate way for Bolas to show his brother that he is better than him. Poetic justice at it’s best.
The destruction of Amonkhet and Ravnican society is just collateral damage.

Hey folks! Just to clarify: We're really excited to share more of Magic's story in more places, which for this arc means both story articles on DailyMTG as well as this novel from Del Rey. #MTGGRN, #MTGRNA, and [MILK] will all have separate web stories in addition to this novel.
(And we'll have more info on when you can expect to see those #MTGGRN stories in the coming weeks!)
(and replying to someone asking if you need to buy the novel to get the ending and if the online stories and novel will be different;)
The DailyMTG Magic Story and novel will be different, correct! And that first question is tough without spoilers. We think story fans will want to read both, but in both you'll get to see the outcome of the conflict on Ravnica.

Arlinn Kord, who I actually find interesting even though she was pretty poorly handled (one and a half stories and absolutely irrelevant to the block's plotline?). Arlinn at least has a remotely interesting backstory and an internal conflict to drive her character.

All of which got completely kneecapped by her only being able to shape shift on Innistrad, which means we aren't going to get her outside of Innistrad, or her flavor will be heavily gimped in any non Innistrad set.

Eh, perhaps taking a bit of Innistrad's moon (say, a shard of the Helvault) with her to other planes would let her shift on other planes. It would still limit her to sets with double faced cards (small potential for exceptions), but it's a way to keep her flavor outside of Innistrad.

I don’t believe there is any correlation between a Planeswalker being bland and being a human female.
Estrid’s character was poor because the character was revamped late, once Tamiyo was understood to not work for the design.
Hauatli was actually refreshing particularly once we saw her naivety and cultural bias expand and shatter. The real problem with Ixalan was that it’s story was too overshadowed by real Colonialism to give all the factions proper greyness, and as a result encouraged bias.
We don’t know enough about “not doctor strange” to critique her character.
In fact the only recent female human planeswalker to annoy me deeply is Vivian. And that’s mostly because she reminds me both of a Environmental Knight Templar and of how problematic Ixalan was.
I am excited that more women are able to see themselves in the game, and that Wizards is expanding their market.

According to today's MaRo article, two guilds in this set and three guilds in the next will be under Bolas' control/influence. Also, each of the five Bolas guilds will be led by a planeswalker loyal to Bolas.
So Vraska/Golgari is one. But Ral is not yet leader of the Izzet (as far as I know). Niv is still bopping around. So are Izzet confirmed as the second, or could it be Boros? Dimir flavor texts imply the Dimir aren't down with what's going down. And I don't think Selesnya would fall for the Bolas bit. Is it possible Boros is a 'surprise' Bolas guild? Or are they just going to go with Izzet.
EDIT: If I were Bolas, I'd want to turn the Boros, since they'd likely be the most threatening army to my own.
-Guilds and Allegiance happen around the same time as Ixalan and Dominaria, so the Gatewatch aren't huge players in the story yet.
-First two sets will be about Bolas influencing the guilds.
-Noir feel with elements of the cold war, with the guilds have internal and external struggles with each other.
-5 guilds will be under Bolas control 5 will not though all the guilds will have elements pulling it into both directions.
-Each Bolas guild will have a walker controlling it. So far seems true with Vraska and Ral and would be a very different path for Kaya to end up on Ravnica next set.
-To make the tone feel like things are getting worse, 2 guilds in Guilds will be Bolas controlled, while 3 guilds will be Bolas controlled in Allegiance. This seems to have stuck with Izzet and Golgari being the two Bolas guilds.

Do you think they’ll try to maintain color balance across the pro- and anti-Bolas sides? Because if so, then with Izzet (UR) and Golgari (BG) in the bag, then the other pro-Bolas guilds in Ravnica Allegiance would be Orzhov (BW), Azorius (UW), and Gruul (RG). Which planeswalkers could be Bolas minions for these guilds?
The story for Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance will likely not feature the Gatewatch as it takes place concurrently with the Events of Ixalan and Dominaria.
But the third act will heavily feature the protagonists and antagonists.
Mind tricks or not, I am not buying vraska being anything but a villain after killing isperia. Personally I never liked her really lore wise, ok yeah she was... rapped or something while in jail but really she just boils down to "f*** the police" and being jace's not-girlfriend

I'm personally looking forward to seeing what she does.
And three of the guilds in the next block are under Bolas control? Sheesh, I can't wait until no more Bolas. I wonder if the Planeswalkers will have a 1:1 correlation in terms of colors. Could make it plausible to take a guess at who the three in the next set are based on color balance then.
