Now that Ixalan's story is over, does anyone have any ideas what this card was about? It depicts the dinosaurs being wiped out by a meteor, and the flavor text implies that it's somehow a result of the search for the Immortal Sun. Was this an alternate timeline that's been averted somehow? Why would the search for the Immortal Sun be connected to a meteor impact? Or maybe I'm overthinking all this, and it's just a reference to the fact that the dinosaurs in the real world got wiped out by a meteor?
Also, can anyone explain just what the hell is even going on in Baffling End? I absolutely can't make heads or tails of that card, I can't even tell what the card art is supposed to be depicting.
Star of Extinction depicts natural disasters from the past misuses of the Immortal Sun which resulted in all life being wiped out of certain areas (hence why the spell only destroys one land). It's also a reference to the real Chicxulub impact.
Baffling End sees a creature suddenly turn to nothingness. A curious Dinosaur investigates and when the spell is broken it goes back to being vicious on the same side of the field.
Ultimately Star of Extinction was just a top-down* design that made it into the set "because Dinosaurs." It has no real relevance to the storyline.
*That is to say, a card that started off with the flavor concept (Asteroid causes extinction) rather then a design/story purpose that fit the set. I'm pretty sure that's top-down (rather than bottom-up), I might be confusing the two?
