OrzhovPlaneswalker: If Tiana is the angelic reincarnation of a Weatherlight crew member, smart money is on Hanna. She was the original artificer / person who kept up the Weatherlight, no?
I would love if Arvad was wearing a pair of fake mustache and pretended to be a human. Also it could say something like "Oh gross, blood, I'd never drink that, cause I'm a human, not a vampire, but won't be cool if I drink some of it, you know, just as a joke?"
I would love this in the story. Anyone think he's Sengir related?
Also, I think Jhoira was the original tinkerer on Weatherlight before Hanna. And I don't know if Magic does reincarnation beyond Darigaaz. My first paranoid thought was maybe it was Serra pretending to be an angel, but then I remembered Serra was dead.
I think the key to the angel is whose guardian angel she was originally, since she now had nothing to guard.
Ajani wonder if he was one of the influences for the weatherlight returning now.
Good story again, like seeing how everything coming together.

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
I'm just curious, did that story have any value to anyone who is not familiar with the old stories? Unless you were playing the game and reading the novels back in the Weatherlight era that story was a whole bunch of nothing. What was so special about Gerard and Sisay that she needed their descendents. (not being sarcastic and I'm sure there's probably an answer.)

I'd think for someone unfamiliar with the Weatherlight lore it would be akin to watching a heist movie, at the point where "The team" is assembled. Think films like Inception, Rogue One, Ocean's Eleven and The Great Train Robbery. The mission has specific needs, so you're going to go out and recruit the people you need for the task. Having an angel on the team that is familiar with the ship is useful, so is having a person on the team that is naturally resistant to magic. You wanted a veteran fighter on the team, but instead you get a rookie mage with a demonstrated knack for illusions. that could come in handy at some point in time. and you just happened to luck into a Vampire knight that wants to be part of the team. Vampires are immortal, super strong and are willing to cross lines that normal people wouldn't to get the job done: very useful traits.
if you look at the story that way, then you don't necessarily need to know the histories and lore behind these characters.
I agree this seems kinda rushed and I am going to need more about the Weatherlight Resparking as far as explanation. Also Jhoira didn't mention Karn so I assume he will pop up unexpected in this story.

Well Urza did make the Legacy Project to create the best humans possible in Benalia as in a Super Solider Project.
Still this ties into my later point what is Jhoira's mission here? I mean I guess defeat the Cabal but she didn't really explain it. I mean I don't think it should be hard to convince the Capashen to join if the plan is to end the Belzenlok threat via decapitation strike. I am putting together a team that will use the Weatherlight to drop in unexpected and take out Belzenlok seems like it would sell better then slowing losing a war of attrition. Furthermore, Ajani is the one she is waiting for? No offense, to Ajani but that doesn't really seem good enough as your Ace. I mean Jhoira works at Tolaria and knows two Archmages and the best she can do for a spellcaster is some random Capashen? How bad is the relationship with Teferi and Jodah here? She cant get the Dean of Iteration or the Master Wizard either?
Cause I have to agree with smashkicker, Jodah or Teferi alone would seem worth more then this entire crew cause the only useful ones to me seem to be Jhoira, Tiana and Ajani.
1) I want those stained-glass bracers that Raff has.
2) Arvad is neat.
3) Apparently we now know who Ajani was expecting to get.
The timeline of Gatewatch members seems to be firming up.
End of Kaladesh - Gatewatch sans Ajani go to Amonkhet to face Bolas.
Ajani goes ... somewhere.
Days pass in Amonkhet, and the Gatewatch is defeated by Nicol Bolas.
Jace goes to Ixalan.
Gideon, Liliana, Chandra, and Nissa make it to Dominaria.
Nissa quits and Chandra leaves.
[Events of current storyline]
Jace arrives on the Weatherlight, and meets back up with Gideon.
So... if these stories are in chronological order, then this can't be Ajani's first stop. Did he visit the story circle first?
Edit: Oh, and Tiana has a connection to the Weatherlight because it is literally powered by Serra's Realm. Probably one of those 'why didn't this come up before' realizations.
We shall see.
We don't necessarily know that the Weatherlight crew part of the story and the Gideon/Liliana part of the story are happening concurrently, do we?
Well no. I mean we saw Jhoira raising the Weatherlight at the start of one but the timeline could be desynched. Plus at the end of Ixalan, Jace walks onto the Weatherlight and seeing as he is met Ajani before it seems weird he wouldn't detect his spark next to Gideon's when he was trying to land.
So we could have Jhoira try this mission and it go pretty wrong. Which makes sense I guess, I mean really when your best Mage is simply good at Illusion Spells well you cant be surprised if your mission goes south. Its super funny cause Undead at least DnD wise tend to be immune to most mind altering spells.
As one very familiar with the Weatherlight Saga, I'm enjoying the parallels:
Shanna as Sisay or Gerrard (if Jhoira is lead Captain)
Raff as Ertai
Tiana as a "good" Selenia
Arvad as a "good"(?) Crovax
Ajani as the catfolk Mirri replacement
While Teferi and Jodah seem to be best choices for Jhoira's project, it seems that Teferi has become a recluse and that Jodah may be not as interested either. Time changes relationships, and there seems to be some strained relationships here. Jhoira is aiming for nostalgia to rally the people of Dominaria in using a Sisay and Capashen (though I didn't realize Sisay was a last name, and I don't recall her anti-magic abilities).
The pacing, as many others have noted, is very fast. However, we aren't reading a novel, and we aren't quite reading short stories any more (as the stories of the other sets have been established). We don't get names for each installment, just Episode numbers. This is an abridged novel. They are free content that aims to tell an epic story. This set could have served as a great opportunity for a full published novel, but since that was not an option, I'm happy to read through these. They're fun, short, and adventurous. I don't expect a full literary work from Magic nowadays, and am happy with their current direction given the state of things.
Well that be rich and hypocritical for Jodah...blames Oldwalkers for everything...Demon Lord conquering the plane, all the Oldwalkers gone and he is sitting on the bench twiddling his thumbs while the normals he claims to care about are put to the sword.
Amusing how Azor and Ugin came up with a gigantic slab to contain Azor's spark while Jhoira appears to have fit Teferi's into a little necklace.
Oldwalker Arrogance? Kinda like Voldemort, the optimal method of hiding his Horcruxes would be to pick a random object put a bunch of protection spells on it then drop it in the Ocean. Beyond that I assume the Golden Sun had more complicated properties then simply store a spark. It does massively enhance magical ability as well.
We don't necessarily know that the Weatherlight crew part of the story and the Gideon/Liliana part of the story are happening concurrently, do we?
No, we don't, of course. However, we do know that the stories have to merge at some point in order to have Jace's arrival 'make sense'. Also, Jhoira basically gives it a day or two to get the Weatherlight wreck 'up', and the events in between with Gideon and Liliana take about that long, no?
I think Jhoira is gathering the descendants/ distance relatives of the Weatherlight crew to counter Belzenlok's attempt to ape history. Who better to figt someone trying to rewrite the past than the legacy of the heroes of the past.

Excelent point! That explains all the focus on history in this set!
It would have been more interesting if Jhoira's crew assembled by 'chance' to include the descendants of the past Weatherlight crew, only to have her take a moment a recognize how similar to the original crew the one she assembled turned out to be. And then feel a pang of nostalgia and destiny, intermingle. Perhaps not enough time to flesh something like that out, but overall the story was good but rushed. I am enjoying how it is shaping up, but I do agree that just as I was really delving into it, the story cut out.
Similar by chance? Then this place would erupt with the convenience of the story and how it's not genuine.
By being straightforward and recruiting direct descendants of the ships legacy, it feels more honest. And it makes total sense for Jhoira to do so, and for the overall story. Hundreds years later and who better to fill the new weatherlight than those of heroic blood? Plus the newcomers have the right amount of space and opportunity to play supporting roles. Tiana in particular is interesting. Why would Raff know about her?...
Not bad. But as a hardcore Vorthos, there are some things/inconsistencies that irritate me.
Three major:
- "Urza's casting his final spell to end the Invasion"
- Jhoira knowing Jodah from BEFORE the Invasion
- "From the upright way the ship sat on the ground, it must be already partially awake and supporting itself." - wait, so the Weatherlight will be not only rebuilt, but SENTIENT again? Despite it required Karn's help and later *died* during the Null Moon flare?
Less irritating:
- using of the term "the Powerstone" with capital "P"
- Jhoira knowing Sisay - for what it's worth, this might be even possible, just never mentioned
And yeag, Tiana is Hanna. Somehow. Reincarnated? Probably not. Holding/inherited/absorbed a part of her essence? I guess that this will be explained, but the hints are subtle as a twenty foot neon-flashing giant statue.

I'm interpreting "awake" in the sense of "working", not in the "living" sense.

Does it? I don't especially see why Jhoira would go off to recruit descendants of the Second Weatherlight Crew. I mean Karn sure but Jhoira, I don't especially remember any interaction between her and the likes of Captain Sisay and Gerrard Capahsen. So it comes off as fanservice and trying to recapture the magic purely for nostalgia, I don't see a story reason. Seems like she start with Teferi or Jodah, I certainly be looking to pick up an Archmage for a major mission. I am not opposed to getting the old band back together or what is close to it per-say but Jhoira doesn't really have much of connection to the Second and more Famous Weatherlight Crew outside of Karn who we know is showing up but is currently MIA.
I totally missed Tiana being Hanna. Which clues are you referring to? I see her connection with Serra's Realm (not that Selenia was necessarily drawn to it, but the detail of Serra's Realm within the powerstone didn't exist when Selenia was created (and destroyed), but I don't see a Hanna connection. Right from the start when the angel responded to the Weatherlight, I assumed it was because of Serra's Realm, but maybe that blinded me to other hints?

When I say reincarnated, what I really mean is the way in which Angels are sometimes composed of both pure W mana and righteous souls.
The angel is experiencing a connection to the ship that is above ordinary, is an Artificer in her card, and their almost seems to be a sense of Déjà Vu in her reaction to the Weatherlight.
