So we get Teferi backstory and how he met Subira. Nothing huge plot wise but like the Tiana story it helps flesh out the characters.
It also looks like Belzenlok took over the Cabal a little after the mending, maybe the mending was the reason he was able to escape the abyss?

Eh we don't know what the Abyss is or the Demon War that got Belzenlok trapped in.
After the Elder Dragon War and Before The Fall of Thran? Probably but that is what 15,000 years of time?
Love at first sight really? Not impressed. Also it took him what 20 years to think gee maybe I should check on some of Urza's Old Artifacts...wouldn't that be like the first thing he check?
5 Chapters to go still got to get Karn, Jaya, Belzenlok and Bolas as major appearances. The pace is going to have to be rushed or the chapters are going to have to be long. Bolas can pop in at the end but are they going to do anything to make Belzenlok seem a legit threat before the final fight.
Yeah this was a good one, we have Subira, so people complaining that she wasnt on the screen can rest satisfied that she was in a story now.
I had the same thought as Perkunas, is kwende's card him 50 years before DOM? not that it really matters, just a funny thing to do with the story.

To those who were arguing about Teferi settling down and starting a family, it looks like this story is your answer...or at the very least more fodder for debate.
It looks like Martha Welles was reading your minds...

Maybe the card Kwende is Kwende the Second or Third?
I really liked how they depicted the Mono W antagonist. Despite being vengeful and mistaken, he did not let his vengeance break the chief points on his ‘paladin code’, despite having broken the spirit of such a code long ago.
A perfect Pharisee-like character, who backs down when a stronger, wiser character has the guts to intervene in his vengeance.

“The wind whispers, ‘come home,’ but I cannot.”
— Teferi
It's nice to see Teferi, capable mortal mage. Quick thinking drawn in by a mystery. Far from omnipotent but still fairly capable. It's a little off putting that during his lamentations over his powerlessness to save Zalfir he never thought of Urza's artifacts, but I'll assume he was more self loathing than actually trying to think of a way to save it. Having finally gotten over that with a family, he is ready to actually try some non Teferi things.
Love at first sight really? Not impressed. Also it took him what 20 years to think gee maybe I should check on some of Urza's Old Artifacts...wouldn't that be like the first thing he check?
Teferi found her to be beautiful at first sight and considered potentially pursuing a relationship (that's lust, not love, and most relationships start with at least one person finding the other attractive). Subira was more concerned with solving a murder and keeping Kwende from breaking his code of honor for rather poor reasons. Presumably, the time spent traveling and working together (between the Kwende incident and the time skip at the end of the story) led to them getting closer and a relationship blossoming.
The ~20 years to think to check out Urza's old works is a better point. To be fair, he evidently spent a good amount of time after the Mending evading assassination attempts and establishing himself as a different person and then was busy protecting the caravan until he settled down and had Niambi. Even then, I'd have expected the thought to have crossed his mind earlier, but it seems an unfortunate aspect of the current medium for Magic's story that the realization would have to wait until a parallel to Zhalfir was presented in story.
Eh we don't know what the Abyss is or the Demon War that got Belzenlok trapped in.
Yes but what we do know is A) the rifts had been ******* up not only stuff on Dominaria but other worlds and B) after the mending a lot stuff was changed on other planes such as The Great Aurora on Lorwyn happening sooner then excepted and the aether boom on Kaladesh. I could see a rift effect being whatever was trapping Belzenlok and when the mending happened it allowed him to finally escape.

On Belzenlok hmm maybe Bolas got him out of the Abyss either before or after the Mending, they do have a working relationship. Still don't know when Belzenlok got stuffed in the Abyss though.

Meh Lame.
That reminds me of another thing. I am no expert if you were trying to be hidden while avoiding assassination attempts and had a famous name would you not I don't know not dress the same way you used to and change your frakking name? Teferi is suppose to be smart right... Now look I don't expect a writer to be smart as the genius character they are writing but come on this is basic. Change your clothes, change your name.

Can't argue much there. I mean, it's evidently the case that it wasn't an altogether uncommon name prior to Teferi phasing out Zhalfir (given that his 'family name' claim went entirely unchallenged) and only fell out of use after said event, but he still should have changed his name. I suppose there's the issue of learning to react to being called by the new name, which would give him away until he got really used to it. Even then though, he's had years to do that.
Perhaps he could have considered it reverse psychology. He's a mysterious Zhalfirin traveling from town to town going by the name Teferi. Are people really going to suspect him more as being the Teferi if he goes by his actual name, or are they more likely to discount him as being the Teferi because the Teferi would be using an alias?
Another issue would be his appearance since his slow aging makes it really easy to recognize him by old depictions. But that could be somewhat obfuscated by the long hair and beard he's depicted with in the cards (though the story appears to have pretty much ignored that in favor of him just living with people who don't want to kill Teferi).

The card sets and story timeline doesn't match sometimes, such as Tezzeret being long gone from Alara during its storyline or Neheb having been a champion a generation (so 20 years on Amonkhet) before Samut and Djeru time.

I was thinking the same things, it also helps with Teferi character growth because he can see the long time effects for the "everyday" people.

Also, didn't expect that of Kwende. Caught me off-guard. Does this mean Kwende's card is 50+ years ago?
They did something similar with Neheb the Worthy in Amonkhet, who was killed and eternalized years or possibly even decades before the main story.
I wonder if other legends in the set are contemporaneous to the current events, or also decades or so ago if Kwende is an 'old' card. I was just assuming they were all bopping around at the same time.
Either way, I enjoy the legends and the little tidbits about then on Twitter!
I really liked today's story. It was a nice way to bridge the gap between Teferi being a wanderer and Teferi being a doting father searching for how to restore Zhalfir without his former powers.

I actually wonder if its a common name because of Teferi.
Yeah but he is still wearing basically the same outfit as always.

I don't think we ever actually get a description of the clothes he's wearing in the story. Yes, the pictures have him in his old outfit and with his signature staff, but we know that such depictions are for the sake of the viewer recognizing the character over an accurate depiction of what they'd be wearing (for example: I remember hearing that the staff Urza is depicted wielding in Urza's ruinous blast, while signature to his look as we know him, was acquired by Urza long after he unleashed the sylex blast depicted in the card and was only used in the card's art so the viewer would better recognize the character as Urza | I also remember a similar complaint and response regarding Gerard's outfit in the Masters25 Ensnaring bridge art).
To those wanting Bel to feel like a threatening villain, I think that's the point he's not. He's only a megalomaniac doing overcompensation for when he couldn't do anything because of all the god like planeswalker.

That is what I expect as well Lili's Demons dont have a good track record but that makes it sad no one bothered to stop him and the team being assembled to take him down overkill.
I'm glad they included today's story, because it helps newer players relate and become invested in teferi. I'm starting to think there has to be more than 12 stories. There is just so much to cover. Maybe the story will bleed into another set and we'll get resolution for some loose threads afterwards.
Still reading this chapter I still dont get why Jhoira thinks Teferi would not want his spark back.
My current assumption is that they know his spark is no longer helpful in returning Zhalfir, this assumes it wouldn't help. And that giving him his spark back would amount to telling him to give up on Zhalfir to help others in need. It makes an amount of sense but is still a disappointing narrative.
I really liked the story. Interesting little mystery plot, and clever twist that worked well. And delightful characterization of Teferi. Speaking of which, he seems like the exact type of guy who wouldn't bother changing his name.
