Hey, I was wondering if you could name a villain in MTG that you absolutely despise and was or will be happy to see get what's coming to them.
HOD is a showcase of the evil and cruelty of Bolas, but most of us have been more marveling at the level of power and cruelty of Bolas than actively hating the guy or rooting for him to fail.
so If Bolas isn't the guy you love to hate (or just plain hate), then who is it?
and note, I said VILLAINS. so you can't say Jace or Nissa.
Until recently, it was Bolas. I despised his character and thought he was just a lame supervillain made all the more insulting in that he was supposedly far older than Yawgmoth. I wanted him to die so a cooler villain could take his place. But Amonkhet Block brought me around to him in a big way. Here's the post I made on the subject:
Yawgmoth. Konda. Memnarch. Ixidor. Phage. The First. Hell, even Emrakul, in the end. Every single one of these villains was better written, better-developed, and more nuanced than Bolas. Yes, God of Evil Yawgmoth was more complex.
Bolas struggles from poor characterization more than actual concept. He's supposedly the oldest, wisest, most malevolent planeswalker in the multiverse, but until very recently he lacked any actual sense of awe or majesty, cackling from one plane to the next like a cartoon villain, always up to some dastardly deed motivated by simple greed or spite. He didn't behave like a millenia-old god-dragon, he didn't sound like one when he talked. Whereas Yawgmoth actually felt majestic, overpowering, and indeed, Ineffable (after "only" 9,000 years), Bolas has been around over twice as long and still isn't past the Bond Villain stage.
However, Bolas in Hour of Devastation actually looks like the apocalyptic, nightmarish, godlike terror he always should have been. Watching the Hour of Devastation trailer, I could feel it in the swarms of locusts, the thundering titans, and the descending plagues. In the Hour of Revelation fiction, I could sense it in the despair of Naktamun's crumbling faith and the waters of the Luxa turning to blood. On Amonkhet he has finally succeeded in becoming an awe-inducing presence, and I'm going to enjoy him now, because he might never be this cool again.
On a separate note, Takeshi Konda was always to me one of Magic's best villains, while also being utterly detestable. His arrogance and pride, his blind faith in his own righteousness and his "My will is the greater good" attitude made his final fate (certainly the most brutal ever suffered by a main villain in MTG) satisfying even if it was horrific. The climax of the second Kamigawa book, and his interactions with Takeno, really drove his character home. Scott McGough did a wonderful job writing him.

Most of the old Phyrexians, honestly. Especially Davvol. No one likes Davvol.
Definitely Heliod, with Elspeth's murders being the latest in the strings of atrocities of a petty, childish tyrant. Almost everyone in the fandom wants him dead

McGough did a remarkable job with the Kamigawa trilogy. I agree Konda's fate was the most horrifying imaginable. I wonder if he is still in that state, actually.
I've seen Heliod described as a villain, but I can't stress enough that although he is arrogant and detestable himself, Heliod is not a villain. Clues in Godsend suggest otherwise. After Kiora's theft of the Bident, Dack's theft of the gauntlet, Xenagos's ascension and disruption of the natural order and Elspeth having stolen Godsend itself and slayed a god with it (rightfully so) it's easy to cast PWs as troublemakers. Then we have the only two gods who understand what a PW is - Kruphix, who was reserved and silent about them for centuries, and Phenax, who is just about the last individual anyone wants to seek understanding from. Heliod was no doubt manipulated with his own causes for suspicion as a catalyst. Worse yet was the bargain with Erebos exacerbating things.
I personally can't stand Bolas. He is interesting to me as a villain, but I find his behavior on Amonkhet horrible. Emrakul can at least be a natural disaster. She had insight enough to see things go wrong, and was lured to Innistrad. But Bolas? Wow dude. And to what end?
Most of the old Phyrexians, honestly. Especially Davvol. No one likes Davvol.
In fact, everyone hates Davvol so much that no one cared that the Phyrexians made him work on his birthday.
I like Davvol! He's so ******* put-upon. Gotta love a villain whose motivation is being tired of his boring job. Actually, I sort of like every Evincar.
Even if Heliod is an antagonist-but-not-a-villain he's probably the most hated, with Konda pulling a close second. Something about the self-righteousness and hypocrisy of white-aligned villains pisses people off more than the honest self-servingness of black-aligned ones.
The entirety of New Phyrexia. I thought I liked Elesh Norn to some extent but it turns out that I only liked the card for the abilities. Maybe if I learned to not get attached to legends in a set by reading a few lines about them, I wouldn't be completely opposed to them coming back. They had to jump through so many hoops to make it happen and the end result leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
New Phyrexia as a whole when it comes to villains. I would normally be fine with this like with Hour of Devastation, but they killed off Slobad and Glissa.
Me: Can we please return to Mirrodin? I want to follow more of the story with Glissa and Slobad. Wizards: I dunno.. Me: Pleasepleaseplease! Wizards: Oh alright. (Le Me reads first story article) First Story Article for SOM: "...then Glissa and Slobad got horribly murdered by a pack of panicking goblins. Then Glissa got zombified and brainwased by Phyrexians. The End."

Reminds me of returning to Innistrad only to have Jenrik killed right off the bat. "He's just an unknown flavor character WOTC doesn't even remember!" they said. But oh, they remembered him alright.

Pretty much. Also I still can't beleive Jenrik did that in the story, walking to Markov Manor to talk to the vampires about celestial disturbances. I honestly forget, was there any reason that Jenrik couldn't have just sent a letter to Sorin about the matter? Since Jenrik kind of likes to cut himself off from society and prefers to study the celestial bodies in the sky.

Because WOTC felt the need to kill off Jenrik so Jace would be the lead investigator on Innistrad and still be involved with Tamiyo. Because Gatewatch. Heaven forbid we have actual local Legendaries with active roles in whatever transpires on their own world. I see no reason Jace couldn't have consulted them both. But lolPWSoapOpera

Also its a really missed opportunity for them. As by trapping Emrakul in the moon, you can have individuals like Jenrik go very slowly insane from it even though Emrakul has been rendered mostly harmless.
But anyway I personally miss some of the more old school writing for villains like with Ambassador Laquatus.
I do not hate any villains in mtg. MTG has only good villains. Even Volrath who is a campy shapeshifter is a very entertaining villain.
What I REALLY hate to this day is Gerrard Capashen. This hero was showcased through so many expansions, he was geneticaly bred to be a hero, and he was showed down our throughts expansion after expanson. His only redeeming factor is the plot twist where he chops of Urza's head in Yagmoths Phyrexian Arena.

I think we can basically resign to all threats being Planeswalkers only now. Even creatures who can traverse the planes like Eldrazi get shelved or Dues Ex Machina'ed. SOI/EMN was pretty good, but really just look at the current villain roster and you'll get a sense of how there's nothing special about any plane except the other Planeswalkers who show up there. I'm fully expecting Vraska, Ajani/Jace/Whichever Gatewatch members to be the major focus in Ixalan. It'll be a Planeswalker who finds Oracaza or whatever it is, not the natives who lived there for centuries.

Agreed, which is why my vote go to Nahiri and Heliod.

I think this is because people EXPECT a black aligned character to be self-serving and power hungry. That's normal behavior for Black.
Whether intentional or not a lot of people still see white as the "good" vs Black's "evil" so a white villain seems more like a personal betrayal.

I'm fairly sure that Jenrik would not have been the protagonist of SOI even without Jace to fill his role. Heck, even if Wizards hadn't decided to focus on planeswalkers half a decade ago, they might have still gone for a new character to lead the ivnestigation over using a one-off flavour text character.
Personally I found it neat that Jenrik was mentioned at all. They could have also just swept him under the rug like literally 99% of all flavour text one-offs.
Also, if you believe that Jenrik is anywhere near the same level as Glissa and Slobad I got a planar bridge to sell you.

he was working directly with Tamiyo. And if you really think it's better that he ended up dead yours post isn't worth replying to at all. Also it's about principle not characters. Duh.
This thread is for talking about villains that appear in magic. Not for gripes with WotC employees. Not for bringing up the history of a non-villainous minor character that was killed off. Keep it on topic.
I feel bad for Nahiri and IDK to what extent she is a villain. Someone had to suffer under Emrakul. Might as well hit two birds with one stone by making Sorin and his world suffer the way hers had, instead. Ugin and Sorin did the same to Zendikar for the exact same reason, let alone trapping her there despite being a PW.
Heliod - he destroyed Godsend while killing Elspeth, further evidence of having the natural order of Theros in mind when he did.
