A character that is RB would 100% be the sort to fervently love his family but not give a ***** about anyone else. Angrath can be the not crazy or evil RB walker we deserve.
I wonder what his abilities will be then. So far we've only seen him being a decent fighter who fights with burning chains. Fits a minotaur character as they are physically strong but PW combat abilities don't translate that easily to cardboard unless they can become creatures themselves. But that's basically Gideon's thing (And one Sarkhan card that turns into a dragon) so I wouldn't expect that to be part of the ability suite.
Maybe some combination of taunting and messing with combat:?
Angarth, The Angry Dad2RB
Legendary Planeswalker - Angarth
/+2\: Target creature attacks during his or her controller's next combat step if able. Until the beginning of your next turn, if that creature deals combat damage to you or a planeswalker you control, destroy it.
/+0\: Until the beginning of your next turn, whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, draw a card.
/-8\: You get an emblem with "At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, goad all creatures that player controls".

Something like that is a yet unexplored PW angle that befits a combat character.

The secret to enjoyable Commander games is not winning first, but losing last.
If my post has no tags, then i posted from my phone.
I'm gonna put my money on +1: target creature can't block until the next end step. Its an ability that would clearly reflect his chains wrapping someone up.
Angrath is my favorite character in this whole story after finding out his backstory though. I hope the guy wins and gets off this plane. Pretty sure he's not as nasty when he's back at home. Mardu colors then, maybe?
You say that, but we don't know what has happened to his daughters in the time he's been trapped on Ixalan.
:-(
If the daughter thing takes a dark turn, it would make for a very interesting storyline IMO, which is why I'm hoping they do well with this character.
Also, Angrath could very well be the gateway to a potentially brand new plane a la Tarkir.
Article on the mothership says there are 6 elder dinosaurs that evolved separately from Ixalan's regular feathered ones. I would guess that means one in each color and a 5-color dino. It seems that they, along with the golden golems, are most likely to be the guardians of Orazca. This leads me to think that the start of the rivals storyline will deal with Jace/Vraska and co avoiding Orazca's security measures (which have probably been activated and claimed by Kumena)

I wouldn't look too deeply into that, considering we didn't see Jace ally with the Merfolk or Nissa helping out the Amonkhet desert survivors in the story proper.

Like Amistad eh? Going home only to find his town and family destroyed, hating himself for not being able to protect them, live the rest of his life in grief and anger, approached by Bolas to go on a raging murderous fit.
Or
Go home found girls missing daddy very much, loving wife still loyal and eager to make more moos with him. As Daddy bragged about killing and pillaging and burning things on Ixalan, daughters look at him and said, "We want to do the same when we grow up!" "Daddy will teach you all about Rakdos, sweeties."

As much as I'm loathe to admit it, I think the first option is more interesting. Plus, we've still got the well-adjusted parentwalker with Tamiyo, so Angrath could serve as a sort of counter example to her. A warning of sorts for why planeswalkers shouldn't get attached to planebound beings.

It makes me sad just to think about it really.
Bolas needs to fill his Rakdos minion quota now that Sarkhan's ditched him.
As for planeswalkers being attached to planebound beings, I think it's a complex issue that has to also factor in the walker's personality.
Is anyone else reminded of China Mieville's TheScar? Both have fish people, pirates and vampires fighting over an object of mysterious power, both have strong ties to the pulp genre/retro Weird fiction, and both even have floating pirate islands made of ships. In addition, Vraska seems rather similar to Bellis Coldwine (at least mid-book Bellis), and Bolas is doing a darn good SPOILERSilas Finnec impression especially in his relationship to Bellis/Vraska. Going out on a further limb, the Tishana-Kumena feud resembles the Lovers/Brucolac conflict.

I like the first one as well, especially if it is Azor that made the Binding.

1.) Do we have any idea when the Rivals of Ixalan story will start up (sometime this month, I'm sure?) and
2.) Do we have a good estimate for when official previews begin? I read somewhere that it would be around Christmas, but I was wondering if we have any sort of confirmation for this.
At any rate, the art book releases on January 2nd, and we tend to get our first art book spoilers what, a week or so in advance? In which case we have maybe two weeks before we know roughly how the Rivals story plays out. The hype here is building.
A sympathetic rakdos character that isn't insane or kill-crazy? Took them long enough.
While his motivation certainly makes him sympathetic, his depiction in the story and especially in the cards is still pretty much kill-crazy and somewhat insane so far tbh.
For now his backstory is pretty much just an informed characteristic that may even never matter.
His portrayal in the story has actually been rather pathetic, lovable, and awkward. That's not a criticism, by the way-- just an observation. He comes across as a pitiable, blundering, somewhat humorous dolt, almost cute. His art paints him as some kind of badass, but in the story he's anything but.
On the one hand the cards definitely depict Angrath as a murderous, destructive psychopath.
He's only shown up in two stories so far though and Chalsis' description is quite right, he is certainly less the psychopath. He's not oafish or bumbling by any means. He is clearly a dread pirate who almost got the best of Huatli, a famed warrior amongst her people. It's just that when he saw that she was a Planeswalkers, seemingly the first he's come across since being trapped on Ixalan, he sort of freaked out and tried switch taxtics. Since that was Huatli's first walk( the confusion of a first walk and learning about being a walker is an underused bit) she didn't understand what he was trying to say. The Red part of him clearly has taken over every time he's seen Huatli. He gets excited at the possibility of someone who can help him leave and his tongue gets ahead of his brain.
To think a bit more about it the cards make him out to be destructive but not directly murderous. I mean certainly hes probably killed and his crew probably does a lot of it too but he may be no worse than Huatli.I think he's a lot more nuanced than he's getting credit for due to how unknown he's been.
