I think U/G is probably the most likely combination to be both open to the idea of other worlds and intelligent/curious enough to find out. I say this because U gives a character an interest in learning and advancing knowledge, making them more open to earth shattering ideas, while G would make the character more willing to accept a concept that makes their place in reality and importance mean less. Niv Mizzet is smart enough and curious enough, but too proud and sure of his importance to seriously consider the existence of the multiverse without evidence, he simply would not just choose to stop believing that he isn't one of the 10 most significant beings in the world and rather just another lifeform on just another plane in an infinite multiverse.

So it appears that Under the Silver Moon is the story this week. Was it known that there would be another break from the current story for the holidays?

Nice setup, and it does look like we're going to get a Weatherlight 2.0...
That is assuming that Rashmi, Mitul, and Saheeli break their promise to the Gatewatch to not pursue planar gate tech any further.
Unfortunately, and ironically given both Rashmi's speech and the fact that Mitul wants to go for time travel next (and at this point, I'm giving up on the writers ever looking back at the old lore where time travel was more dangerous than planar travel), I doubt marketing is going to allow a non-planeswalker recurring cast; or for that matter, anyone who isn't a sworn member of the Jacewatch.
Awesome story, I was laughing and crying at the same time, that’s the Chandra I love
The character felt human and relatable again, the pacing and the action was good, things happened and most of the purifying fire is canon now, the story she told was still different in the book, but anyway at least it wasn't Test of Metaled.
And Baan, glorious Baan, the Sheldon of Magic still "just" doing his job
Stories like this make me feel like we should have started on Kaladesh. I know the Gatewatch would never have been formed without the Eldrazi, but having them face something more realistic, more human helps establish them as characters. After that they should have started adding more and stronger opponents, it's the mistake my D&D group made, starting all epic and leaving the characters aside for more action, until it felt so dull that we had to restart.

Thanks to DarkNightCavalier from Heroes of the Plane Studios for this sick Signature.
Its awesome they brought up the Purifying FIre, and even gave a bit of a wink to the changes in the story (Gideon chiding Chandra for not being completely honest about her backstory)
I love how Gideon refers to himself as hoplite when he's in his own mind.
Having difficulty understanding if they're setting up affection between Chanda and Nissa or Chandra and Gideon? Then again the latter have history and he could easily be a father figure to her, in a sense. IDK!

As per Chandra's thoughts, Gideon doesn't make her "tingle in all the places I like" anymore. Meanwhile, she acts like a love struck fourteen-year-old trying to talk to his/her first crush when trying to have even the most minimal interaction with Nissa so you do the math.
Interestingly, Gideon does seem to have maybe thoughts/feelings beyond mere friendship towards her (the comment about missing how it felt like he'd hugged the sun), but I'm willing to bet it is not to be.

RIP Magic Duels. Wizards will regret what they did to you.
That story was a lot to take in. I got lost at a couple points from the sheer amount of words, the "internal thoughts vs words spoken" dynamic, and the multiple viewpoints but I liked the story overall. The shoutouts to Purifying Fire were cute. Baan had several moments that were great, especially against Baral. It'll be interesting to see if Baan realizes that he's on the "wrong" side.

The funny thing is, if more of the Consulate were like Baan, then they wouldn't be the wrong side.
But alas, when you have Tezzeret running things and ********s like Kambahl on the leadership team and Baral heading up the guard squadron, kinda more than evens out Baan's good-intentions.
So that was an epic, insightful and fun story. Had me hooked throughout, even if Chandra's internal thoughts were at times difficult to follow. Among the highlights were that 2 of the Gatewatch nearly got taken down by an old blue mage equipped with a sword and some islands open for counterspell magic. Which to me as a R at heart player, I found both annoyingly accurate and funny. It's also nice to see Gideon has certain "limits" to his indestructible magic. He also seems to have learned somewhat from his Boros tactics and isn't nearly as bad of a leader as the whole damned Seagate debacle. Liliana's curtsy cameo is so flavorful I can taste the rotting grapes in my mouth. Loved it.
You know, despite being firmly in Mardu territory among my personal alignment, I've never found a version or writer for Chandra who has hooked me onto Chandra.I've always enjoyed Koth's resolve, Ajani's selflessness or the snark of Liliana and Sorin more. Having said that, this author made me really like and feel invested in Chandra. Despite not feeling nearly as spastic as Chandra, her impulsiveness and desire to keep pushing against the odds out of emotional need was relatable. Her fear and internal monologue feeling like things beyond her control were still her fault makes sense, and trying to atone for them, even though it went poorly is, like Gideon said, a sign of maturity. It's also fun to see how Nissa and Gideon are doing their best to keep her grounded and helping her along, as the Gatewatch dynamic continues to unfold. Chandra felt more real and relatable this story, and I'm not entirely sure why, but I enjoyed it.
Lastly, to address the obvious, I get the feeling that Nissa and Chandra aren't quite the thing some think. Is there some deep emotional support between the two, borderline flirting? Yes, for sure. But I think the key scene was the beginning of the story with Chandra, Nissa and Gideon on the patio or roof or building part thing. The tension and thoughts between Gideon and Chandra about each other are palpable before Nissa interrupts. Nissa even seems to be noticing the thing, and tries to leave to give them space. Chandra wants desperately to connect with and not upset Nissa, but I don't think it's ever been purely romantic in intentions, whereas with Gideon that's heavily implied between both of their thoughts.
So yeah, story is great, Chandra is finally relatable, and now I hope we see more Dovin, because his whole demeanor is annoying and yet awesome to read. He's law and order embodied, and I'm glad he hasn't become generic "I'll get you next time gadget!" villain.

Vorthos-player with way too much time on his hands and a love of thematic decks.
EDH - Yes, Each One is Named After a Song. I love tying music to my decks.
Is it just me or was there an awful lot of talking going on during the battle considering that it was, you know, a battle? It kept alternating between fight scenes and relatively long conversations (Nissa and Chandra, Dovin and Baral, Chandra and Baral) without really explaining why whoever was talking wasn't being killed by an adversary.
Having a bunch of romantic hints in every other story without going anywhere with it is going to get old fast. Do something with it or don't, but don't put it into half the stories for no apparent reason if you're not going to ever resolve it.

Story was good other than that, though.
I think part of the talking was for effect. Baral does it to upset and rile up Chandra, leaving her unfocused and vulnerable to attacks. Dovin does it because he's a thinker vs a fighter. Why use fists when words leave deeper wounds? Chandra because that's just how she fights. Normally I'd be with you, but for the above reasons as well as dramatic effect, it made sense in this particular story.

This story *definitely* had a lot of material for shippers! It seems to me like they may be setting up a love triangle here: Gideon likes Chandra, Chandra likes Nissa, and Nissa's not quite sure how she feels. In a previous story Nissa seems to be struggling with the concept of friendship, so Chandra probably has her work cut out for her. I loved the scene where she and Gideon were hugging and she immediately jumps back when Nissa walks in. It was so incredibly corny and trite and exactly like something out of a romantic comedy that I couldn't help but adore it

As much as I loved the development of the heroes in this story, I found a few bits about the villains to be particularly interesting as well. Specifically, some of Baan's observations about Tezzeret and the way that Tezzeret basically "turns off" his anger at a moment's notice seems to imply that his outbursts are a little more calculated the what they appear. It was also great how Baan commented that Tezzeret didn't actually seem menacing during the outburst, but appeared much more devious and cunning once he'd "calmed down."
Also, as much as I dislike Baral, I loved his line after his defeat about all makes being monsters. It's almost like he sees the "monstrous" parts of himself in other mages, which makes him want to take them down even more (or at least that was my interpretation of it). It actually made me feel for him a little bit.

I collect Legendary cards, Planeswalkers, and Sagas.
Current count of different Legends: 1314
Current count of different Planeswalkers: 213
Current count of different Sagas: 44
Is it just me, or is it that writing action sequence is by default an extremely hard thing to do? We have professional writers at WotC, and yet I still can't bring myself to get invested to the action sequences of Baral vs Chandra to the point that I believe I missed a lot of things of what's happening.
Anyway, decent stories, for sure. The changes of PoVs are a nice touch for sure.
Lastly, to address the obvious, I get the feeling that Nissa and Chandra aren't quite the thing some think. Is there some deep emotional support between the two, borderline flirting? Yes, for sure. Chandra wants desperately to connect with and not upset Nissa, but I don't think it's ever been purely romantic in intentions, whereas with Gideon that's heavily implied between both of their thoughts.
I'm not so sure that's the case, atleast regarding Chandra's feelings. Mostly because of this important line:
"It's been a long time since anyone held me like this. If Gids had done this four years ago, it would have made me feel tingly in all the places I like. Now it just feels...
...Safe."
That to me seems like a more brotherly / protectorly sort of relationship. It is plainly obvious that Gideon has feelings for Chandra, but I don't think Chandra reciprocates them. Meanwhile, Nissa and Chandra both seem to stammer and not know what to say when talking to each other like you would see a 13 year old do around their first crush. That and the fact that Nissa went with Chandra to fight Baral and was the only thing that stopped Chandra from, what I can only imagine is, going supernova and destroying everything. So I think there is atleast some level of romance between Chandra and Nissa (even if neither really "know" it yet), and now Gideon has been thrown into it as well.
Regardless, this was a really great article to characterize Chandra. That being said, for my personally, I think Liliana really stole the show, even though she was only mentioned like 3 times. The curtsy and crowd-admiring was just awesome. Plus the codenames she came up with (Beefslab and Cloak Boy? Really on point) were hilarious. And finally, acknowledging that, once again, Gideon ends up with his shirt off just took the cake for me. Really great, and on point, humor, in my opinion.
