Really disappointed with this one. Tezzeret acted like a five year old that had hia favourite toy taken away from him. This is the man who stole the consortium? This is the man who trained Jace and beat him?
This is the man who lost the consortium too, don't forget. Who lost horribly to Jace. Who couldn't handle the pressure Bolas started exerting on his organization and started taking out his stress on his subordinates.
While I agree his portrayal in this felt a little one dimensional, the Gatewatch arriving and interfering with his plans puts pressure on him, pressure he showed in AoA he couldn't handle well. He was very much in character for 'Tezzeret stressed out and no longer feeling on top of things'.
Indeed. This is the man from AoA, just all things amplified a bit. We have seen him roaring in bestial rage and tearing metal things apart when Jace interfered with his plans. I agree with Jay's words - he is cool and all, when he is on the top, and very quickly falls into rage tantrums when he is not, and under pressure.
It is also the final nail to Test of Metal's coffin concerning canonicity....
It's not as if Blue can't have emotions, guys. The difference is about emotions vs. logic influencing Blue's decisions.
Thassa had the option of outright murdering Kiora on numerous occasions during their battle and came close to doing it twice - but her curiosity about other world's oceans and logical desire for devotion took priority in spite of her rage.
Tezzeret could and promised to murder Rashmi and even went to do it, but his desire for a matter transporter and logical reasoning that it was more relevant than his anger or vengeance overwhelmed that desire.
They're both slow to anger and feral when livid - but their better judgment triumphs.
I personally really liked this story, and thought Tezzeret acted pretty much the way he always has. I'm really looking forward to the Rashmi/Saheeli/Gatewatch other worlds explanation story. (Assuming we get one). I feel really bad for the inventors, think you've won the fair and are headed for prestige and then instead you get abused and worked to the bone before (likely) being killed. I'd still like to think some portions of the Consulate are legitimate and well meaning but it's really seeming like the Consulate is going to go full evil empire in AER.

Am I missing an obvious reference with respect to the plane with purple clouds, mountains, and yellow flowers?
I'm also wondering about this. All the other references can be tied to known planes (though the maw of a beast is pretty generic) but purple clouds, with snow-covered mountains on which yellow flowers grow? That really threw me off.

There was still the consul who Tezzeret threw out when she tried to point out the problems with diverting so much aether to the Spire.
There are undeniably good people within the Consulate (for example we have no real evidence that Dovin Baan is a BAD bad guy, just.. easily manipulated and rather naive), it just seems that there are at least as many that are firmly in Tezzeret's pocket.
The purple clouds, snow-covered Mountain covered in yellow flowers could refer to Tarkir. The purple clouds could refer to the Dragon Tempest that makes the dragons

Any government (or large scale organization, for that matter) is going to have its share of both decent people and deplorables. And most individuals on the lower levels are just people who have a job and are trying to do their jobs. Baan's a good example- he legitimately believes the role of the Consulate is to make citizens' lives better, and clearly doesn't have a flying clue what Tezzeret's motivations truly are (one could ask what even got it so everyone's put so much faith in Tezzeret, but that's another discussion).
The functionary who got kicked out (and probably killed) was another one. She probably was a lower level official, and had a closer eye to the ground on what consequences Consulate policies actually had with the populace. It may be out of a genuine concern (ie, she takes her public official duties as serious as Baan does), or it might because she's realizing the population of Kaladesh is getting more and more pissed off by the second, and she'd rather they not go into an open revolt that is more than likely going to end terribly for her.
The problem with Tezzeret is not his tantrum, it's his "What you're making belongs to me and I'll kill you after its successful anyway" threat that wasn't subtle in any way. That's outright motivation for anyone working under you to go "If I'm going to die either way, might as well die trying to take you out with the automaton". Well I guess vastly overestimating yourself while being short-tempered is something I just cannot relate to (or comprehend for that matter).
Bolas could afford that temperament because there are very, very few things that can outright kill/cripple a weakened Elder Dragon planeswalker. Tezzeret does not look like (or actually really demonstrated) he has that endurance.
I agree with what you're saying Jay but at least in Agents he was a more well rounded character. In the begining of Kaladesh he seemed collected. He saw Liliana and barely blinked. He faced all of the gatewtch and ajani and Pia and never lost his composure. He did not even throw a tantrum afterwards with Baan.
Yet now barely a few weeks later where he is apparently calling the shots over the consulate (he's head judge no longer, now its head consul) and everything seems to go to plan and jace and co are nowhere to be seen... He freaks out? I just dont get it.
About the comparison to Rashmi, I think they have an overlap but Tezzeret has some sort of life draining abilities. Pia felt cold when he touched her with his arm and its an ability often depicted in his cards. Rashmi seems to be better on creating stuff (especially creatures) on the fly.
Also that plane with purpe clouds has been mentioned before in Alara Unbroken. Sarkhan made his first walk there, where he first saw a live dragon.

I think you're getting Rashmi (inventor) and Saheeli (planeswalker) confused.
Anyways, here's the thing about Tezzeret. I never read agents of artifice (or Test of Metal), but for his Kaladesh appearances, every time we've seen him before, he's been in a position where he pretty much had to play nice. Yes, he was capturing Pia Nalaar, who was Public Enemy #1, but an abusive display like he gave Rashmi would have engendered sympathy for the renegades, which in turn would have jeopardized the inventor's fair. In the arena, he had to be a showman, keeping the crowds entertained (and the Gatewatch occupied) to allow the confiscation to commence with minimal interference. With Baan (who he was actually a total dick to), Tezzeret knows he needs Baan to believe that he's doing what's best for Kaladesh and the Consulate. Being outright abusive to him will force Baan to have second thoughts. With the inventors in the Inquirium, he no longer had to wear the mask- he could abuse them all he wanted without consequence, and so he did. I also suspect so much of this was simply to intimidate and drive Rashmi. Remember- he straight up told Baan the only invention that truly interested him was Rashmi's, and once he saw Rashmi was making actual progress, he removed all the other artificers immediately. His treatment of the other inventors was pretty much just a warning to Rashmi on the consequences of HER failure.
Patience could also come into play- before and during the fair, he had no choice but to be patient, and let everything play out. After the Fair, he needed the transporter done as quickly as possible (and might even have a deadline set for him by Bolas, thus adding to the stress). Either way, I strongly suspect that if Baan saw what he was doing to the inventors, he'd be appalled- further evidence why Tezzeret wore a mask of politeness and calm around him.
As far as the similarities between Tezzeret and Saheeli, I think they definitely have the same powers. But, like Gideon said, 'Walkers are more than just their powers. I think one of the more telling differences is that Saheeli's more creative than Tezzeret (hence the red- a color of creativity). You can see it in the quicksmithing contests- definitely a test of creativity- Saheeli's proven herself a gifted natural who defeats pretty much all her opponents by using simple quicksmithing methods. Tezzeret, in the same situation, more or less cheated and used his Planeswalker powers in order to beat Pia. Furthermore, Tezzeret's been stated, that while he's not very good at creation, he's very good at improving on someone else's work. That plays very well into black- the ability to take something of someone else and make it your own. You'll notice that when Rashmi was talking about her need to diminish the feedback with the transporter, it was Tezzeret who basically gave her the solution.
In the same sense, I think you can draw a connection in powers between Tezzeret and Dovin Baan. Tezzeret's good at improving artifice- which means he can see its shortcomings. That's an ability Baan's very good at.
I like how only Simic legends can be aware of other planes. First Kruphix, then Kydele, and now Rashmi. Norn and Gitaxias know that other worlds exist, but they don't know any specific details. And Muzzio just knows that some are ruled by machines. Only the Simic legends actually know any real information about the multiverse.
I really, really hope that Tezzeret ends up having been plotting against Bolas the whole time. It would be so funny and ironic when the Gatewatch find out that they actually hurt their own cause by stopping him. Pretty much every block after RTR has ended in a "victory" for the hero(es) but with serious consequences, so it's definitely possible.

In theory, all of the Preators should know about the multiverse because it is spoken of in the scriptures, and because the Oil grants visions of the original Phyrexia. Plus, Glissa was aware of the multiverse before her zombification, as well as her potential (now gone) to become a planeswalker. So she is definitely aware.
What I like about this story is that it really doesn't appear that the speculation is true about New Phyrexia becoming involved with Kaladesh (at least, for the time being). Why? Because it neatly reflects Phyrexia's own origins, but with everything reversed: the Phyrexians were the rebels against a decadent Thrawn society, and yet they were the bad guys. Yawgmoth steals the secrets of planar travel from a genius artificer (and potential planeswalker) out of envy of a planeswalker he had met, and after destroying the Thrawn civilization Phyrexia was trapped on another plane by the very artificer Yawmoth was stealing stuff from.
On Kaladesh, the Renegades are the heroes fighting an outright corrupt government. Rashimi, an inventor, discovers the means of traveling the planes using artifice with some guidance of a jealous, but benevolent planeswalker friend only for Tezzeret to steal the technology for his own, unstated purposes. At this point, its not known what the fate of Kaladeshi society is, but obviously the conflict will (or should) have quite the impact on the status quo, especially if the speculation about a new planeshifting airship being made comes true. In fact, I want two new planehopping airships to be created: one for Tezzeret and his goons to ride away in, and another for the Gatewatch and the Renegades to chase after him in. That would be cool.

I mean, let's see... Theros Elspeth dies, I wouldn't call that a victory. Tarkir is definitely a victory for Sarkhan, but broadly speaking not really a victory, though I guess you can count it if you want to. Zendikar definitely a victory, but Innistrad feels more like a lull than a victory, especially given that it was orchestrated by Emrakul. So really of them only one is a very clear victory on almost all fronts I'd say.

Edit: Crap, I forgot this was no-spoiler discussion. Anyway, I agree.
Theros: Xenagos is defeated but Elspeth dies.
Tarkir: Ugin is saved and dragons don't go extinct but the dragons enslave the humanoids.
BFZ: Titans are killed but that might be really bad for the multiverse. Also, two continents were lost.
SOI: Emrakul is imprisoned but only because she wanted to be. She could escape in the future. Plus, many inhabitants of the plane were mutated or killed.
RTR was a clear victory for the heroes, SOM was a clear defeat. Zendikar made things look pretty bad for Zendikar in ROE. Innistrad is open to interpretation.
The general trend is that the heroes succeed in what they set out to do, but the sacrifices required or consequences that follow can be quite severe.
I'd like to point out that at least a portion of Gideons army on Zendikar have some idea of the multiverse because they know that Gids and company are planeswalkers.

And Tamiyo's family, the educated portions of Dominaria, the Mercadian elite, Avacyn before she was unmade (since she sent Vronos to find Garruk), parts of Esper's elite who studied Vronos and gave him his etherium mask in exchange, and possibly the Vampires who dealt with Sorin.
Yeah, a lot of people know, including those who aren't green/blue. Mostly from dealing with planeswalkers, both new and old.
Is it possible the Consulate is being set up as another member of the GW rogue's gallery? Beyond Kaladesh even I mean. Through Dovin Baan they have access to other worlds, and that may become even more pronounced depending on what happens with Rashmi's portal after Tezz is done with it. I can certainly see the Consulate remaining as a plane-specific antagonist in the same way that Heliod is, but I also think the seeds are there for them to go bigger, especially depending on how much the Gatewatch ticks them off. Lastly, Baan has already shown he's willing to collaborate with other walkers to help protect the Consulate, if things aren't patched up peacefully with him by the end of the block he seems like the type who might organize/join a legion of Doom if he thinks stopping the gatewatch is a priority.

Not particularly relevant to the conversation, but just pointing out that it's now been two months since the full Gatewatch arrived on Kaladesh.

This is why I think a Ravnica 3 is going to be sooner rather than later. Jace vanishing for months on end has got to be bad for stability on Ravnica and they sorta need to undo that whole "Jace is the Guildpact" thing.
