So I've wracked my brain and can't figure out who Liliana is talking about here. "We only kill ugly things, then? Because the short one, he would've still qualified." Who is the short one? Am I missing something?

She had just killed a group of Consulate guards (who saw her and Gideon leaving Yahenni's penthouse.), she was speaking to Gideon, and referring to one of the guards (who was apparently short and ugly).
Most of the old books are canon unless otherwise specified. Quest for Karn and Test of Metal seem to be the exceptions, I don't think those books are canon since they don't make a lot of sense and they don't really mesh with the rest of the continuity at all (for instance, Quest for Karn had Glissa ruling over New Phyrexia instead of the Praetors).
Quest for Karn is partially canon.
Venser is still dead for I know.
Elspeth, Koth and Venser were all fighting on Phyrexia.
I think that Glissa was ruling over New Phyrexia because she and Tezzeret fought over who will be the ruler and once he came on top (imagine that, a guy who is basically a god on a planet made purely out of metal had won) there was that meeting between him and the praetors that had went horribly wrong after Koth had tried to kill them (and unfortunately survived). I think that the meeting had something to do with Tezzeret now being the ruler of New Phyrexia but that is a really old story so don' quote me on that one.
It was a really bad book. No wonder the novel line got canceled after its release.
I don't believe there is any part of Quest for Karn that doesn't 'mesh' with current cannon. Other than the method in which Venser saves Karn, but if you assume it wasn't literal it makes a lot more sense.
A few points of clarification. Glissa was never in charge of New Phyrexia. It was split among the 5 preators with Glissa working for Vorinclex. The black faction was also split amoung the seven steel thanes, whom our old friend Geth was a part. Tezzeret never really got close to ruling because from the beginning the preators were semi united against the 'outsider'. By the time Koth and Elspeth tried to blow up the rulers of New Phyrexia Tezzeret had long sense left and the black and red domains had fallen to Elesh Norn. We don't know anything about the state of New Phyrexia after the mana bomb went off below their meeting place other than that Koth is still alive and being appropriately tortured.
Koth should really die already.
I vaguely remember the mana bomb story but I am sure that Tezzeret was present when that took place.
You're right Tez was still around towards the end.
From The Lost Confession:
We'd learned that the praetors were gathering in the throne room to select a new Father—or Mother—of Machines. Tezzeret was supposed to be there, too. But if so, it was probably so the others could decapitate him or steal his body parts for some grand new construct. We didn't know if the praetors would ever be in such close proximity again. This was our last chance to do damage that they might actually feel.
Anyway, I can't be the only person here who didn't like the bracketed language in the Yahenni story. It felt so out of place that it just bothers me.
No, I agree. The story itself was okay, but all those interjections were just awful and pulled me out of the narrative every time. But this is something the author (forgot her name) does in most of her stories.
I personally have no qualm with this, given that it actually sings well with how some people run multiple trains of thoughts concurrently; The text inside the bracket are some secondary thought while the POV character is looking at another thing. But yeah, I can see your point.

I actually often speak this way out loud, and certainly type this way (as any in depth search of my post history will no doubt attest). Thus it not only didn't bother me, it fit in perfectly with the way my brain works anyhow.
Its almost kinda funny just how much of an abusive tool Tezzeret is, and I love how Rashmi's smart enough to realize what the implications of her invention actually are once she actually knows whats out there. My fave part's the ending, when Rashmi realizes that whatever Tezzeret is, her friend Saheeli is too, and the realization scaring the utter crap out of her.
I'm glad to see that the native characters are having much more of an impact than they did during SOI block. This definitely sets up the leaked story cards nicely, too. I'm looking forward to the next one!
Today the story made sure we all realized that Tezzeret has no redeemable qualities and is not least bit likable. Fine. He is Bolas' #1 heal and he deserves much of the hate he gets. It was a good story. I believe we all knew where this was leading, so not exactly a lot of plot twists. The awaited confrontation between Liliana and Tezzeret will be delayed that much longer. This story lands right in B territory for me.
I really liked Rashmi's measure of Tezzeret, that for all his bravado, he can and will be outsmarted by others. And the way she handles things towards the end was fun.
I also imagined that scene where she realizes there are other worlds similar to 2001: A Space Odyssey's end sequence.

He is likable (well, more like tragic) when you know why he's the way he is. But since Creative is retconning all of the novels...
Really disappointed with this one. Tezzeret acted like a five year old that had hia favourite toy taken away from him. This is the man who stole the consortium? This is the man who trained Jace and beat him?
It seems to me Kreines just went overboard in trying to make him unlikeable and made him look stupid instead. She did the same thing with Nixilis back in BFZ.
To be clear I am not saying he has redeeming qualities. He does not. He is a villain to the core, we all know that. But he is supposed to be someone smart. Threatening and degrading your bunch of precious geniuses is not going to get you anywhere. Throwing them out/ killing them when they finish a project is just stupid.
excellent story. I'm partial to the tales where the lowly "normal guy" outwits the mighty Planeswalker (or other being at that level) by basically turning their own arrogance against them. Tetsuo Umezawa besting Bolas and Xantcha thwarting Gix both come to mind.
Now that Rashmi has an inkling about Planeswalkers and the multiverse, it looks like Miss Saheeli and the Jacetus League Gatewatch have got some 'splainin' to do...

Killing them's not. If you think they have no further use to you, and there's other people who could benefit from their information (like say six planeswalkers who just showed up to wreck your show a few weeks ago), why not silence it?
I have a sneaking suspicion that the others who got dismissed all met similar fates.
Not a huge fan of Tezzeret's portrayal. That first Tezz image was pretty good though. He's a son of a *****, an intimidating, extremely smart son of a *****. The screaming and stuff...eh. But I'm still waiting for a story from his perspective to flesh out a lot of story holes since New Phyrexia.
Also, since the portal maker knows how to make a perfect portal but needs a lot of aether, and she just hooked up with her planeswalker friend who likes making flying creations and is introducing her to the uprising that wants to let loose the flows of aether, I think there's going to be a plane-hopping outcome there.
Also, how different are Saheeli and Tezz's abilities, in-story?
I'm personally tickled by the fact that one of the planes Rashmi saw appears to be Mercadia...nice bit of nostalgia (I liked Mercadian Masques' story, if the set itself was weak.)

The market? She appears to have glimpsed Zendikar as well. Is the starry sky Theros? She's the second legend to know of other worlds to the same depth as a PW would - the first was Kydele. IF you're B/G, you've got it made henny
Tezzeret felt icnredibly childish and petty in this one, he felt very red in this having tantrums. I was expecting more arrogance but in a calm expression like he wasn't trying hard to act superior. Not a fan of making generic villains like how they turned Ob Nixlis into one and now looks like tezzeret became one aswelll :/

Other than the clear reference to Zendikar, I don't think the story gave us enough information to definitively identify the other planes Rashmi saw. However, I suspect the writer did have specific planes in mind for at least most of the references. The cityscape was probably Ravnica, for instance, and I agree that the starry sky could have been a reference to Theros. The marketplace could be Mercadia or Rabiah, although given Creative's dislike of Rabiah (as it does not represent original IP), I agree that probably was Mercadia. Am I missing an obvious reference with respect to the plane with purple clouds, mountains, and yellow flowers?

This is the man who lost the consortium too, don't forget. Who lost horribly to Jace. Who couldn't handle the pressure Bolas started exerting on his organization and started taking out his stress on his subordinates.
While I agree his portrayal in this felt a little one dimensional, the Gatewatch arriving and interfering with his plans puts pressure on him, pressure he showed in AoA he couldn't handle well. He was very much in character for 'Tezzeret stressed out and no longer feeling on top of things'.
Also at least I can forgive this because A) he's in character, B) it's very ironic and sad if you consider his backstory and how he's pretty much became his father and teachers.

Tezzeret to me always seemed to be a sore loser (he has reasons for being this way, but still). And the problem is: He isn't superior.... and knows it deep down, which is why he is incapable of the cold and calm expression of other villains. As has been stated even before this story, Tezzeret is quite good in a few magical disciplines (like his metalbending), but very uncreative and not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. That's why he lost to Bolas as well as Jace and now to Rashmi. He is cunning, but has to use other people to do creative work for him. And when he notices that he has been bested he can't handle it well.
By the way: What is a generic villain in your opinion? Because that could include "cold and calculating" villains as well as "hot-tempered and insane" ones and everything inbetween.
I also like that Rashmi is the very first non-planeswalker person living after the mending to experience other planes. So much story potential opened right there
Saheeli's more straight up replication of creatures. Tezzeret has a broader focus.
Visually, Saheeli's metalbending is rainbow (Red) while Tezzeret's is evil-looking (Black)
I think that if it was Saheeli vs. Tezzeret in the duel, they would likely have been fighting with very similar powers, the constructs would just have different form/appearance. There's not as much distinguishing (to me) their individual powers as, say, Chandra and Ral Zarek, and Domri Rade and Garruk.
Saheeli and Tezzeret strike me more as if Chandra and Jaya Ballard met up. Others might be more in the know to their specific powers, though, so this opinion isn't set in stone.

I mean, her art and Tezz's art being so mirrored does make this seem likely.
