I have some good news, and some bad news. The good news is, I am almost one with Tazeem. The bad news is I'm going to be traveling for a good three weeks, starting Wednesday. I won't be able to start working on Murasa until then.

First post here in a long time. I've been preparing to DM a campaign on Zendikar for a few months, and was of course delighted to see the art book and planeshift: zendikar material.
I've been looking for a map of Zendikar for a while now and yours is by far the best I've seen yet. Thank you for putting in all the effort, people like me, who are awful at making maps, really appreciate it.

It's my pleasure. I just enjoy turning the worlds into concrete locations, and I'm very happy other people can benefit from it so much. If you are waiting for the rest of the map, it will be a while. I am still traveling, and won't be home for at least another week. After that, it will take me a few days to finish Murasa, but at that point, I will be done!

Hey guys! I'm finally back home, and I'm ready to get back to drawing. I revamped the OP, making it follow a more logical layout. I'll post an update hopefully later today, with Tazeem completed. Murasa will follow shortly. Thanks for your patience.

Great work! Where is Coralhelm btw? Sigh. Zendikar was such a lovely setting, and they destroyed it. Can't wait to see Theros. I may do a rough sketch of my idea of Theros soon.

I'd love to see your sketch of Theros. I currently only have a vague idea of what the plane looks like. I will need to read Godsend before I try to draw it. It's on my short list, along with Tarkir and Kaladesh. Hopefully we return to Theros soon, so we can get the associated art book.

I'm far from artistic but here we go. I used information from Godsend - but I'm a bit rusty since it's been a while - Oreskos and the Nessian/Nistos may be switched, but if I recall correctly Nistos is far West, beyond where anyone has tracked before, except Nylea. Oreskos looks very dry and arid, like the East Mediterranean.
I also used real Greek mythology to craft this sketch - the Greeks believed the underworld lands to be somewhere just beyond Ethiopia, where Medusa dwelled. So…
1. I took the Nile River Valley and made it the Rivers that Ring the World, the Sahara Desert being The Despair Lands.
2. The remaining Mediterranean must also exist as Greek Myth involved it. Rather than making an Italy, Spain, etc. I turned Italy and anything north of it into the Nessian Wilds, and Spain into the unexplored and largely unknown Nistos Forest to the West. Where Elspeth claims to be from, as no one has ventured that far.
3. Oreskos is the East, basically the Fertile Crescent - Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, etc.
4. Mainland Greece features a distant Setessa bordering Nessian and Nistos, Meletis on the coast where Athens would be, and Akros in Thessaly where it is mountainous.
5. The Four Winds Plateau is where Mount Olympus would be, with Nykthos in this region as well, in the center of mainland Theros or "Greece."
6. The Straits are where Theros Charybdis and Scylla will be, the main Mediterranean, or "Siren Sea."
7. Note Theros "Troy" where the scene in Launch the Fleet takes place.
8. The Great Sea is larger than depicted, but I ran out of room. It's not linear so one could not sail from somewhere else to it. Also, the oceans spill over the sides anyway, so one could not sail around the ocean which surrounds the landmass without falling into oblivion. It can only be accessed via The Monsoon through the whirlpool Portal.
9. Olantin is placed where Santorini is in the Cyclades isles in our world, which is the true Atlantis in Greek mythology.
10. The Sea God's Labyrinth was an Uncharted Realms. I made the story take place on the Theros equivalent of Crete, where Knossos and the real labyrinth were located.

This looks good. It mostly aligns with the map in my head I developed after reading the PW guide. I'll give it a more in-depth look after I've read Godsend. I might push the edges of the continent a little farther into the Great Sea, to justify the climate patterns and give the illusion of larger world. (per Unknown Shores) In the mean time, I'll get back to finishing Murasa. You have my sincere thanks.

Yes, it should be expanded. This is just a sketch to give relative locations and a general idea of the geography, not necessarily to scale or anything. I thought about putting Unknown Shores on the West or South coast of "Spain" so that one would have to traverse the entire Nistos Forest to even get to that coast, but IDK. Either way this is a vague idea of the layout.
I could really use some second opinions on this one. I need to find and fix any mistakes before I upload the full-res version. Thanks! I hope you like it.

Thank you for your excellent work. I really feel like the many worlds of Magic would feel more alive if we had a sense of their geography. I never took the time to look at the material that tells you these things, so all I ever knew was that Guardian of Tazeem was from Tazeem, and Sphinx of Jwar Isle was from Jwar Isle. There's little indication on the cards that Tazeem is a continent, and Jwar Isle is just a random island. It definitely helps to put into perspective how the geography relates.
Honestly, with all the money Wizards spends on art for their sets, it seems like they'd hire a cartographer to put all the geography together. They could even print a map on the backs of some of the tokens. As any decent Dungeon Master will tell you, you need a map to help drive your story.

It has been stated that Creative doesn't like having maps because it opens up the possibility of inconsistent storytelling (not that that stops them in other areas). Basically, if we are given an exact distance between two places, or even a relative distance between two places and two more, then that means that Wizards would have to do some number crunching to determine how long it would take for characters to travel or people would get pissy.
I don't think this is a good or satisfying answer, but it's the one we have.

Huh. Well, people do like to get pissy. It seems to me like maps would make storytelling easier rather than harder, but just like all the thousands of other Magic players who think they know better than Wizards, it's not my call.
Well, I asked Maro a while back as to why they don't make maps for the planes, and he said it's because Creative just doesn't have the time. I find this very hard to believe. They obviously lay out at least the general geography, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have a sketch of what the planes look like, with the outlines of continents and locations of cities and such. As you point out, it probably wouldn't be too much trouble to commission one more piece of art, and have a cartographer draw up an artistically styled map of the world.
Regarding the whole inconsistent story-telling thing, it seems to me that not having a map actually causes more problems than it solves. Travel times are already wildly inconsistent, with some a journey in one story taking hours, and the very same trip taking days in another. It also leads to the authors completely screwing up the geography of the world, and putting things in the wrong places. Take Zendikar. The Planeswalker's Guide clearly states that Zulaport is on Beyeen, yet in Teeth of Akoum, Sorin and Nissa walk there from the Ondu mainland. Maps, contrary to Wizards statements, actually help make storytelling more consistent. I can personally attest to this as both an amateur fantasy writer and fantasy cartographer. If I had to guess, they don't publish maps because doing so gives them more wiggle room with artwork, story, and a bunch of other stuff.
Edit: I'm not saying I know better than Wizards, I'm sure they have their reasons, it just seems to me like "Don't have time" and "Better storytelling" are excuses. I say this not as a snap judgement, but from my experience with similar issues.
Edit #2: I'm really glad you like my work, Megatroid. I'm happy to know people are enjoying and appreciating these maps as much as I am. It's my absolute pleasure. Thank you.

That map was far more detailed than I anticipated. Absolutely fantastic work!
Though could you increase the contrast between the continents and ocean? It's hard to differentiate the two - especially along the coastline.
Where exactly are you having trouble differentiating the two? All of the coastlines, including lakes, are surrounded by waves, which at a distance, appear as light grey shading. Do I need to darken the waves in some places?

The southern coast of Akoum, Ondu and the south-east coast of Guul Draaz are the hardest for me to differentiate. There is also an island east of Ondu that I missed, but know that I know that it's there it's not so bad. My complaints are specifically directed to the smaller map displayed under the spoiler. The contrast is better on the link you provided.
I thought the map was digital originally. It isn't. Shading the continents a slightly darker color without losing detail would be difficult and inking is pain in the butt. The higher resolution map in the link is finethough. I'd be content with a more noticeable link to it.
