The student of a Nephalian skaberen, Tibalt tried to follow in his master's footsteps, cobbling together and reanimating corpses. But he lacked the talent and discipline for the dark, exacting work. Nursing a growing seed of hatred fed by his own failures and isolation, he began to turn his talents toward the realm of the living. His experiments tested the ability of living organisms to withstand pain.
Tibalt used only vermin at first but then moved on to larger animals and eventually to vagrants. As if summoned by the evil nature of these new experiments, devils began to gather near Tibalt's laboratory at night, whispering in their strange, chittering tongue. In time the devils offered Tibalt insights into what fascinated him most: the true nature of pain. Filled with a sense of power, Tibalt grew more sadistic and more careless, oblivious to the whisperings of the townsfolk.
It was only a short time before an inquisitor's boot kicked in the door of his laboratory. Cornered in a room filled with jabbering devils and torture devices, Tibalt should have been executed or jailed for life. But at that moment he invoked a potent and hateful spell built from the devils' utterances and his own grim discoveries. The spell fused his own essence with theirs—at the cost of inflicting on him all the pain he had inflicted on others. In that moment, Tibalt's Planeswalker spark ignited and flung him across the Multiverse, away from the inquisitors' blades. Now half-human, half-devil, Tibalt is free to practice his "art" on countless planes.
So he is an Innistradian from Nephalia, born human, who fused his essence with devils and in the process ignited his spark. Interesting.

I wonder how long ago he got his spark (1000 years ago, 200 years ago, before or after Avacyn's creation). Chances are he got his spark after Sorin, but that's not saying much when Sorin's one of the oldest walkers we know of.

This feels like a very recent walker.
And he's definitely post Avacyn since the Inquisitors knocked down his door.
I'm sort of vexed in deck building since the more I look at the themes Tibalt has, the more I'm convinced I should splash black to make him work... but Tibalt is, as near as we can be certain, mono red, which is ANNOYING.
Sort of makes me wish they had printed the two mana walker at r/b to start with.
I LOVE this. Like, legitimately. It fits his card flavor so well, and makes so much sense. And while it takes away from the Chasimatic Politroll thing I'd been hoping for, there's still some of that there. Besides which, I don't right care - the changes from what I had hoped just make it all the more amusing, if only because I can totally imagine the scene:
*Tibalt, torturing some innocent person in his lab, gets a knock at his front door. Inquisition comes in*
Inquisitor: Sir, what's going on here?
Tibalt: OH! Hoho! Um, hey guys! I swear I wasn't doing anything bad here. No, not at all. *Trying to hide the person and all the devils*
Inquisitor: Why are there devils in your house?
Tibalt: Oh, them? Heh, don't worry about them, me and Chuckles were just doing some experiments! Hardly worth noticing at all!
"Chuckles" the Devil: *Mad demonic chittering*
Tibalt: ...Shut up Chuckles.
Inquisitor: Gadzooks! You can speak to them!
Another Devil: *Crawls out of the corner, with more evil chittering.*
Tiblat: YOU'RE NOT HELPING.
Inquisitor: I think I've seen enough. You're under arrest! Men, investigate the back room!
Tibalt: *Blocks the door* ohooho, no, now, you see, there's no need for thaaaat, don't you think? I mean, come now, it's not like, hah, not like I actually KILLED anyone or hurt anything, is it?
Person in the Back: OH GOD HELP!!! IT HURTS SO MUCH AND ALL THE DEAD BODIES IN HERE STINK SO BAD AAHHH!!!
Inquisitor: Then what in Avacyn's name was that!?
Tibalt: ...um, chickens.
Inquisitor: ...chickens?
Tibalt: Yes, chickens! Always making such specifically terrifying yells, you know, hah. Seriously, my good man, it's nothing to worry about.
Third Devil: *Mad chittering and opens the door to the lab, and to where ALL the devils are*
Tibalt: Okay, SERIOUSLY GUYS. Not helping, AT ALL.
I like how his sadistic background matches his card and vice versa. Though I'm not quite sure what his "Insurrection" ultimate is supposed to represent.
I suppose he's experimenting on other creatures, so moving creatures over to your side of the battlefield kinda presents that.
Or maybe it's to do with him attracting the devils.
1) I like how Tibalt is not a "prodigy" 'walker (unlike Jace, Tezzeret, Chandra, Lilliana, Gideon, etc., all of which excel in their fields of expertise). He is a failed necromancer, and not having what it takes to create (un)life, he turns to simple torture.
2) When you think about it, he's a 'Mad scientist' planeswalker. Though, maybe not in a completely conventional definition of that term.
Tibalt is a card I keep liking more and more, due to just flavor reasons. Also, Devils tend to like whispering evil things into your mind, they like to cause betrayal as well, and torture can drive a man truly mad. His "Insurrection" might just be him using his influence as a devil

So the two mana and random discard speak to his failures and carelessness, his -2 to the torture, and ultimate due to his alliances with Devils. Pretty cool character, look forward to seeing what comes of him.
I hope the entry on Tamiyo a week from now will be more detailed than the information from her preview (which comes straight from the AVR fatpack player's guide). The Liliana et al entry was basically just a rehash of the same information we'd been given in other articles; being on the mini-site as well only makes sense as a way to have that story info consolidated all in one easy-to-find place rather than making someone hunt through archives for articles.

Umm... chances are I'm an idiot right now for asking this but, where's the source for this? I'm scanning the Planeswalker's Guide right now and I can't seem to find Tibalt's section. D:
EDIT: Oh wait! Never mind! Found it. >_>;;;
On the other hand, I wonder when they're going to put all these on the main PW section of the website? You got Tibalt, Tamiyo, and maybe Sorin's WB version since it's multi-colored and all (so far, every shift in color had itself added).
Also, it would have been better if he's a planeswalker introduced in Ravnica, since inter-racial marriages are common there or if he was a pure devil planeswalker.
Fused with devils? The worst spark origin so far.

I don't know, it's kinda cool if you ask me. Hybrid PW aren't common sure and Tibalt may have had the potential to be the first. Still, in the far more general scope of fantasy, hybrids have become a bit of an overused trope. :\
well the most interesting part about tibalts backstory to me is the part where he goes anzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
(though i like the vaudeville bit on the last page)
That has to be the most delicious Planeswalker origin story I've read. Short but just dripping with goodness. Love it and appreciate the card more now.

Personal hunch, based on Tibalt's article, is that Tamiyo's article will also be an origin story. (It would be nice to actually see Jenrik, though--Tamiyo collaborates with him, according to the Player's Guide to AVR.)
Where the Player's Guide to AVR Tibalt section, though?!?
I actually dislike the backstory, because it's hard to reconcile sadism with the red part of the color pie. Chaos? yeah, that's definitely red. But inflicting pain in order to gain knowledge? That'sasblackasitgets. Maybe Design is trying to say that masochism is black, and sadism is red? It's still wonky. With that said, his abilities are definitely well within the color pie of red.
I would have preferred if Tibalt was more of a failed preacher or cleric, and found he had a gift for inciting violence or fanaticism among groups of people, which would make his Insurrection ultimate much more fitting.
My view is that it makes sense that his sparking is when he infuses himself with devil's essence. SInce all the pain and suffering he ever caused is turned back on him, it must be horribly intense, so the epiphany on the nature of pain that probably resulted is likely what causes his spark to ignite, rather than the procedure itself.
Further, it makes sense for him to be red. Red is the color of emotion and freedom, and Tibalt's actions are based on his deep emotional desire to feel important and talented. Further, its his careless nature and recklessness is what makes him red, as opposed to how he uses his power.
Remember that he's from Innistrad, where almost everything ends up leaning toward black and/or white in flavor due to the setting's themes. His flavor leans hard toward black, but so do many other things on the plane.
His backstory description places a great deal of emphasis on his feelings of shame and frustration at failing at his first vocation. His desire to inflict pain is likely driven strongly by those emotions rather than just a desire for power over others (which would be a more black motivation). It's an outlet for aggression and frustration.

My speculation is that the devils inflicted the reflected pain on Tibalt as a sort of payback for collaborating too long with them (that's what you get for dealing with devils), but it backfired when Tibalt ascended on the spot.
