I've been meaning to get back to the blog but between juggling some projects, two cases of the flu, a flooded basement, rats in the basement walls... well, the list is kind of long and starts to sound crazy after a while.
I'm also trying to nail now the look of the website. It's in it's third incarnation now. In truth, things are being made simpler, not more elaborate.
I do have a couple of pieces in Besieged, and I think one in whatever the set after it is call. However, I'm not sure if I'm in the block that follows. My days as one of the regular artists may be at an end.

That's sad to hear, but look on the bright side.
The flood could drown your rats:D, well maybe not since the little buggers are excellent swimmers... oh, well :(.
But how come you're getting of the regulars list?.
You've been around since 5th edition weren't you?, people grew up with your art..
Sad days:(.

We have an old foundation on the house. 80 years old. And it's had its share of modifications in that time from previous owners and this means there's a lot of little holes. We've had pest people deal with them as they happen and we think we found the biggest issue and plugged that so we may have stopped it for now.
Unfortunately what we really need to do is completely rebuild the lower floor of the house and replace the foundation. Anyone got a spare $100,000 handy? Yeah, that's how much it'll cost.
As for why I'm less and less a regular? It could be the influx of new (and damn good) artists, it could be my art isn't liked, it could be both, only the art director knows. It's a sad thing though because Magic has been my home, kind of my tribe, y'know? And I think that's just not reciprocated any longer.

I would be very, very sad/upset if you go. I'm liking the art direction wizards are taking less and less with each set now.
No offense to the artists, but they all look the same, there's no difference in style.
So i'm very happy to see some Rebbeca, Nills Hamm, Terse Nielsen, Pete Venters (that's you!), Wayne Reynolds or Carl Critchlow art in the mix. In my eyes, this makes a set more atractive as a whole. Stretch a full set of Alara Reborn next to a full set of Mirage for example.
I know that photoshop hyper realism caters to a larger audience, but i think focussing to much on these newer players and leave us old fogey's, who started back in the good Ol' days, neglected.
That said, i sure hope wizards change their minds, i would be very upset if you weren't around drawing wacky goblins, flesh less zombies (carnophage was one of my first cards:P), and also for the work you did for the storyline.
That said, good luck with repairing the foundation, sounds like hell.

Dunjohn, I certainly see what you mean. The positive spin is "unified" and the negative is "repetitive". I must admit I miss the variety of old even if it did make it harder to sustain a brand image.
ION, on my blog, there's the start of a multi-part retrospective of the development of the 8th edition Lhurgoyf (I'm sure Volrath will be pleased).
Spider Jerusalem is the lead character in a major comic book called Transmetropolitan that ran from 97 to 02. It was Warren Ellis's first major break in the U.S. market and it's a brilliant piece of work. Look up Transmetropolitan on Google, you'll find tons of stuff.
There's a charity hardcover art book filled with new art set in the Transmetropolitan world and I'm doing a couple of pages for it. Here's a link to the Kickstarter page that is being used to fund (and pre-order) it.
I just want to say - thanks for the awesome Llurgoyf blog write up Pete - It's always super cool to get insight on how the pros work and even better - for such an iconic image!!!!!!
<high five!>
Also - Transmet = rad

Looking at that lhurgoyf, I really wish you had painted tarmogoyf too. It probably would had been much clearer to see what's going on the picture, since it seems you really like to put lots of care on the look of your goyfs.
Force of Nature FTW. favorite art of all time, nostalgic, and i get lost in it.
Thanks! I had fun with that piece and always enjoyed the annoyed little pixie staring him down. Still, it got radically eclipsed by the Greg Staples version which I got to see up close and it just made my jaw drop.

My pleasure. I like to read stuff about how art is made and I figured others did too. Hope you ordered the Transmet art book. It's gonna be damn cool.

Yeah, I would have liked to have done a few more goyfs and actually kept them within the broad species, y'know just like dogs are one species but have significant variations. Never happened, and probably never will.
Anyway, my fave picture is probably a tie between Tanglewalker and Drawn Together.

When will you add a few new sketches to your blog?:).
Also, did you draw anything voor Mirrodin Besieged?:).

Here's something I'm working on currently - the new Transmetropolitan hardcover for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund -

It's a good cause, a great artistic opportunity and it's in need of donations. Just follow the link to its Kickstarter page.

That would be telling, wouldn't it? All I can say is that everything is on a Tuesday/Thursday release schedule for the next few weeks.
Well, some are a lot easier. This was one of those crazy jobs that's worth talking about just because of how long it took.

The "remastered" picture is great, i love how the more lush world around the Lhurgoyf contrasts the frozen bleakness of the original.
