q: are you going to write the next book of Ravnica block?
Q: i was thinking would it be posible that you can make a character like a spanish guy like a conquistador or something lol
and mi nombre es skellum y tengo un sombrero gracioso
Cory's got Ravnica covered; I am writing Time Spiral, the first book in the trilogy that follows Ravnica. I believe it comes out in August.
I'm also one of the authors in an upcoming WotC coffee table book. It's on Amazon.com now with a release date of June, but that's not attached to any card set (which is not to say it doesn't have cool art).
As for a conquistador character, anything's possible, but in this case he'd have to be a brain damaged/drunken conquistador to explain why he speaks his own native language so badly . My Spanish is just too rusty...unless he's singing along to Los Lobos, however...I think I've listened to La Pistola y El Corazon enough times to know the lyrics phonetically, so I could probably transcribe them well enough.

Setting? Characters? Time Line? Bribes?
Who said that!
It's true I'm not at liberty to confirm or deny any story details. I did post a joke version of the plot over on Phyrexia.com because those guys and I go way back and I have a long history of doing just that. To save you the trouble (and to illustrate how much I can't say), let me repeat what I sarcastically suggested over there:
Okay, I'll 'fess up: the story is all about Haddad, resurrected by Sash and Waistcoat, and he uses the Mirari to go back in time to Fallen Empires in order to sell time-share condos on Urlgotha in a vast, interplanar pyramid scheme designed to convert all of the Multiverse's swamp land into affordable vacation homes. The movie version will star Steve Guttenberg as Haddad and Paris Hilton as Serra.
Good lord, I must stop quaffing NyQuil by the tumbler before I plot novels...or at least before I make joke posts [everyone is aware this is a joke, right? Once more, I must call for someone to invent the Sarcasm Font.]
So that's the kind of thing I get up to when I can't actually discuss story details.
Though I can honestly say that there definitely will be something for long-term fans of the story--some loose ends will be tied up, and some familiar faces will appear.
Of course, there will be new loose ends introduced and new faces showing up for the first time. I'll say more when I can.

Time Spiral would, to me, indicate a return of Teferi on Dominaria--we finally get to see the devastation his return will cause? That was what the author call asked for, a post-apocalyptic Dominaria . . . so perhaps we are returning home? I look forward to what that will bring--I'll admit, I haven't read a Magic novel since the second book of the Kamigawa block (not because it was bad--if anyone recall, Ix and I theorized to no end!--but because of my schedule).
Maybe with a return to Dominaria I may be able to squeeze some reading in?
Of course, this is all rhetorical here, and does not require an asnwer, since you can't give any, Scott. But thanks for whetting my appetite!

Scott, I have a question in regards to the Author Summit.
As we have seen in the past, there have been inter-author miscommunications (such as the end of ODYSSEY and the beginning of TORMENT).
Has communication between the authors changed at all? Are you able to contact them throughout your writing to compare character development, plot progression, etc? I know the story is planned at the Summit, but I would imagine questions arise. Have you been in touch with the others since the Summit? Are you allowed to? Do you need to?
If you are allowed to answer these questions regarding the writing process--thanks!

Hmm...there's a fish-hook there in that question, so I don't think I'll bite.:D
Instead, let me dispute the sentence that begins "As we have seen in the past..." I wouldn't describe any continuity glitches (such as Kamahl's immediate situation at the end of Torment/beginning of Judgment) as bad communication between the authors. That kind of precise continuity is the responsiblity of WotC's editors and Story team. I can say that with 100% confidence because I used to be the Story Guy and some of said glitches happened on my watch. Lin Sivvi's name, anyone?
But to the process question--it's largely the same as it has been: a long meeting between the authors, editors, and rules guys at the very early stages of card set development. Then there's a lot of email brainstorming between the authors and editor, which usually the only time authors talk to each other directly. Once the outlining is done and the first draft writing begins, the authors generally communicate through the editor, who is necessarily the gatekeeper of all things that involve the entire trilogy, as well as each individual book.
The people involved in the process change--the Creative Director, Lead Designer, Art Director, Concept Artists, Authors, Editor, etc., so each group is distinct and does things differently. But ultimately, it's the editor who determines how good the communication is between authors.
Does that answer the question? I may be touchy about the end of Torment, but I don't want to duck the issue.

I didn't mean to plant a fish-hook! I also did not meant to bash TORMENT/JUDGMENT, but I used it as a reference (I would also cite the different dates used to place the Primevals used in PLANESHIFT and the ONSLAUGHT trilogy, but that was the same author). I do apologize for citing the authors--I thought that perhaps you would have had more contact, and not just the editor.
So, in this new trilogy, you three have chatted at the outset, the editor is ready to compile all three books, and you each work on the pieces . . . simultaneously?
I was just asking for clarification on the process of a multi-author trilogy, and you did so. Thanks!

For example, if you squint and turn sideways and you're in a cranky mood, your question could come across as "So, have you fixed all those author communication problems that fouled up earlier books?"
But the Time Spiral trilogy was a little different--we brainstormed the whle trilogy via email because the authors were all so far apart and travel was a problem. Then the authors of books 1 and 2 got together for a summit on the first half, and then Authors 2 and 3 got together for a summit on the end of the trilogy. There was a huge amount of email exchanged, more than usual (because of the split summits), and then I got started on Book 1. Rules and plotllines changed during this time, but I relied on my editor to get all the info I needed to me and also to share all the info I had with the appropriate others (the authors, the R&D guys, Story Team, etc.). While I was working on the first draft of my book, the other authors were working on their outlines (based in part on what I wrote/outlined for my book) and possibly even working on their own first drafts...the question of "simultaneously" is determined by each author's MO in writing a novel.
Thanks for a good question, by the way--shared world co-authoring is a tricky business and I totally understand how it raises questions.

I can't say much--both because I'm not allowed to give anything away, and because I don't want to, either.
What's public so far is that the book's called Time Spiral, features a return to Dominaria, and probably features Teferi as a character. It's also written by me, so it's safe to assume that wisecracks will be made and heads will roll...perhaps literally.

Nah, I won't say much at this point...but I can confirm that there are settings, characters, and time lines. Oh, and page numbers, too.
I can also say that there are some treats for long-term followers of the storyline, like Magic creatures we haven't seen in a while (however, it's not true that the original title was Time Spiral: Army of Onulets).

Glad you like Torment...dementia summoners are a special favorite of mine (especially the ones with silly hats), so if they do reappear, I want to be the one who writes about them.
And yes, there is at least one soratami ninja who mixes it up with Toshi at the start of Outlaw. There were plenty of things I wish I had more time (and pages) to explore in the Kamigawa trilogy, and the moonfolk shinobi are high on that list.

yes we are back in dominaria now that intested me a lot cant wait to look for the book when it come out and tell me when are you going to stop by in Puerto Rico so you can relax and have some fun
Dominaria, Teferi, and a return of creatures we haven't seen in a while. I guess it depends how relative "a while" is. Kavu haven't been seen since the Invasion--did they go back into hibernation, or were they left roaming. Or is this a reference to merfolk mentioned previously or in the other thread (I haven't really looked at cards since Onslaught or so, but merfolk haven't been used too much as of late, have they?)? Thinking back to Jamuraa, there are griffin and minotaurs (the xenophobic Talruum minotaurs from Jamuraa) . . . anything else from the Mirage block that we haven't seen? I am not familiar enough with recent cards to do any leg-work here . . .
Anyway, thanks for entertaining us with snippets of near-nothingness--but hell, it got a post from me, haha. I will be glad to see Teferi and Dominaria and some attention to those of us who know Dominaria rather well (history-wise). It seems that there will be a good chance that I will pick up the trilogy as it becomes available . . .
Zazdor may become a bit more vocal here in the coming months . . .
(yes, I just referred to myself in the third person, and yes, that last comment was assuming anyone actually cares, haha).
Thanks for the posts, Scott!

We can't have Kavu back. I'm pretty sure they went into hibernation again. But the fact of why they were in hibernation in the first place wasn't really explained. Do the Kavu eat Phyrexians specifically? How come nothing was done of this by Yawgmoth or Urza? (One wanting to destroy them, the other trying to get more.) Also, we haven't heard much of the metathran. Are there any around? there should be some alive right?

You mentioned a while ago about the book titles, and how they changed from one-word set titles. I was wondering who gets to choose the book titles? Is it the author?
On the more specific subject of the kamigawa cycle titles, who shose them? As far as I can tell, the titles Heretic, Outlaw and.. the other one (Don't have it to hand) seemed to have nothing to do with the novels themselves - more like catchy, one word hooks than anything else. Or am I just missing something with regards to the names?
Actually it had something to do, if you notice the cover in heretics was konda and as it shows in the book he commits a terrible and heretic actby attempting to capture something from the kami world into the mortal one, in outlaw the cover was toshiro, in the end of the book toshi takes that which was taken away from konda and konda hounds him in search for it, making toshi an outlaw, in saviors the cover was michiko konda, one of the saviors of the book. Scott would be a better person to say wether this is or isnt the case but it does make sense, on regards of who chooses the titles, i suppose we must wait for scott to tell us.

Boricua aunque naciera en la luna
I can't say much--both because I'm not allowed to give anything away, and because I don't want to, either.
What's public so far is that the book's called Time Spiral, features a return to Dominaria, and probably features Teferi as a character. It's also written by me, so it's safe to assume that wisecracks will be made and heads will roll...perhaps literally.
Ooh, I know this one. Wait...no I don't.:-/ Something about being born by moonlight?
If my freshman year Spanish teacher hadn't been so foxy, I might have paid more attention to the textbooks....

Sorry to have missed this post the first time around...and while I am shocked, shocked (do you hear?) to have you offer me bribes, I must also point out that you never mentioned any dollar figures.

Ugh, maybe this should be in Ask the Authers... whatever...
If memory serves, the subtitle for Saviors was "Guardian"?
