Not just any characters, mind you. Main characters. I haven't read past Odyssey directly, so I'm curious as to how Glissa, Toshi, Kamahl et al compare to Urza, Jodah, Gerrard, et cetera. As for those three, my take:
Urza: Very entertaining and quite, quite mad. I rather liked him because he's such a prick to be the great 'hero' of dominaria.
Jodah: Nice guy, easily the most sympathetic of these three. Would like to know what's happened to him since we saw him last--same for Jaya, for that matter, heh.
Gerrard: Worst. Hero. Ever. Well, maybe not--if any of the other nine people in the world who have seen Wizards of the Lost Kingdom are reading this, the little kid entrusted with the magic ring who drops it before even turning around is probably the worst hero ever. But Gerrard is up there. Angst! Pout! Indecision! Ineptitude! I mean, just HOW many times did he crash Weatherlight straight into the ground? He's just so... unlikable. No sympathy is ever developed for him, and in fact, most readers I know root for his death and suffering (myself included).
Well, Glissa's a pretty good main character. She thinks for herself and is capable making a decision and acting on it fairly quickly. She can easily hold her own in most fights, which is good because she's a bit of a loner. She's very realistic and sympathetic and makes good decisions most of the time. Her biggest problem is that she doesn't know about any of Mirrodin outside of the Tangle and just about EVERYONE is out to get her. That begins to severely affect her ability to trust, and causes her to fall repeatedly into traps or puts those she's around in danger.
Toshi is a selfish, smart-mouthed, arrogant badass. He always looks out for himself first, and is sneaky and tricky as hell, but not really deceitful. He likes being a loner and doing what he pleases, but is a member of a loosely tied group of mercenaries with a few very specific laws. The farthest Toshi ever strays from following the code is to occationally that it's going to delay him if he is called on fulfill those obligations. While he's honorable enough not to betray someone, he's perfectly willing to leave someone behind if he isn't obligated to help them. One of his big things is that he doesn't like to rely on anyone else. It frustrates him when he has to get help. The Kami War hasn't really been a big deal for him until he found himself being specifically targeted by them. All in all, he's a really great black hero

Arg, I found the ChK book almost unbearable as I felt the plot was a little out of context regarding the actual cards. All in all, I enjoyed the earlier heroes, such as Urza and Gerrard better than Glissa or Toshi. Kamahl was pretty awsome I have to admit. Though I love the little goblin sidekicks, Squee and Slobad. And Bosh. Bosh is cool as well (I know they arn't main characters)

We all were n00bs at some point. Some just decided to stay n00bs.
Neither goblin is really a protagonist, save perhaps Squee during Masques, and that's pushing it. Personally, I find the recurring goblin sidekicks thing to be rather tiresome.
I'm going to have to say Toshi at this point, as hes black, yet still a protagonist, not something that happens too often. His use of Kanji rocks, and I just got a kick out of the C"H"K novel.
I would also have to say Toshi. He's just the guy that you have to love. Toshi is one of those smart main characters that you don't yell at for making the honorable decision instead of the right one. Toshi finds a way to do both.
@Yoshar: What do you mean he takes no help? What about the Myojin of Night's Reach? She's help him out the yin yang.

Recently running the following casual decks:
snakes/beatdown
:symu:/:symr: 40 card reactor/combo
druid/pump and trample
What can I say? I'm a fan of black mages. Toshi has already been mentioned here. A cool rebellious black mage loner who is quick-witted when he needs to be. A guy who smart-mouths even in the face of near-certain death. One cool cat.
Chainer is similar, except he wanted to remake the Cabal in his image. And that image was snakes. Had he not killed himself with the Mirrari, the Cabal would have been one awesome order of snake mages. Skellum, his teacher, was also cool, and together they made one hell of a team. Not honorable or kind like Toshi, but he did have a heart for the people he knew well. His Death Bloom spell would've been awesome to see as a card.
Braids was a side character all the way to her sudden and shameful death in Scourge. She was best in the OTJ block, as the new author for OLS made her out to be a manic goat clown of sorts. Mad to the core, it would have been nice to see a card version of her that reflected her psychotic dementia summoner side. She killed the Patriarch with her dementia magic, after all!
Worst: Gerrard, Kamahl, Karona, Sash & Waistcoat
Gerrard I think so many people hate, there's no need to go into it. His face could be on a milk carton and people would smile rather than feel sympathy.
Kamahl was just dead boring. He's on this mystic quest and keeps revisiting the dead body of Laquatus because his sword is there with the Mirrari in it. He simply has no direction in his life, and would probably sit around in a mountain range with his thumb up his rear pondering how birdies can fly and stuff. But no, lucky for him, the Mirrari drove some of his actions, people trying to steal the Mirrari drove other actions, and when this dense, slow, dumb (and quite possibly "mentally handicapped") barbarian was unable to figure out what to do, on come Balthor and Jeska to coax him into action. Heck, Balthor had to come back from the dead just to help him with the simple task or getting back his sword. Quite braindead. And no fun to follow the adventures of.
Did I mention how the author for the OLS books made some stuff sour? Oh yes, plenty of bathroom humor all around! Dick and fart jokes for everyone! And the prime candidates for leading these things: Sash and Waistcoat. Two shadows of Ixidor, trained in the fine art of How to Be a Wannabe Stooge. From perving out in women's bath water to getting stuffed full of stray cats, these guys were one Mad TV skit after another. They might have been good characters had they not suffered from the author's constant injections of slapstick comedy.
Best Protagonists: Chainer, Ixidor, Kamahl, and Toshi Chainer was of course only around briefly, but I really liked him...very interesting and entertaining guy... And I've always loved the Kamahl character throughout all of his changes (although he wasn't as interesting in Scourge or Judgement). As for Ixidor, I liked him a lot, kind of like a Chainer, except with very weird and different powers, and I liked his insanity and obsessions. As for Toshi, our latest protagonist, he reminds me of a few anime characters, and a combination of Chainer's attitude with Kamahl's independence...cool character.
Worst Protagonists: That Guy in Prophecy. Oh yeah, and Gliss I won't even state my reasons for totally despising the Prophecy novel...:smile01: But as for Glissa, I've always hated her from the beginning of Mirrodin block, which I consider a lame group of MTG novels anyway...She's not that interesting at all to me, and a very lame character, along with Slobad and most of Mirrodin Block's characters, except perhaps Geth.

:::Favorite Characters:::
Ertai - Annoying, arrogant, and full of himself... Cool character
Yawgmoth - Something about being the antagonist is cool
Chainer - One of the rare good-hearted black characters... Mirari made him evil, just like Laquatus and Kirtar...
Braids - Happy character...
Radiant - Ripped out Urza's eyes... Fun stuff...
Gerard - The AntiHero... So unlikable, yet he's good at what he does...
:::Worst Characters:::
Hazeon - Boooring...
Phage - Static character... Boring...
Glissa - How predictable... An elf in an artifact story... Lets make it even more predictable by making her friends with an artifact...
Crovax - I never really understood his story...
Well, the only M:tG books I've ever read are: Odessey, Onslaught, Legions, Scourge, the Gathering Ice. With that said:
Favorite Characters:
Jaya Ballard: She has a neat personality; I like how everyone owes her debts. She's also smart. Kamahl in Odessey: He had a rogue personality, and a refusal to be cheated. Jodah: Extremely clever, generally manages to get what he wants. Braids: An all-around great character
Most Hated Characters:
I could say a bunch of characters...but the truth is everyone from the Onslaught cycle except for Braids. Simply, they're so bland I don't care about them, which is the worst possible thing you can say about a character in my opinion.

Best Protaganist? Well, Skellum isn't a choice, so I say Toshi. Not only is he a samurai(I LOVE SAMURAI!), but he's also a black hero, basically unheard of aside from Chainer, and Chainer's Torment was really alot about Kamahl. He's snappy, he's funny, he kicks ass, he's a badass, and you know that in the end, he's gettin' Michiko. Dude, it's the daimyo's daughter! Anyways... yeah. Toshi, 100%. I was also quite fond of Urza in "The Brother's War," but he just seemed useless in the later cycles(That, and he lost to the fruitcake Gerrard. Yes, he is the worst hero ever), and it lowered my memory of him.
Worst? Gerrard, hands down. I can't say anything new about him, but god, does he suck.

Yodafan: Official pro of one of Magic’s most casual formats.
Skrat, I didn't say he takes no help; I said he doesn't like to take help. He prefers to rely completely on himself. Did you pay attention to what he actually said when he asks for her help? Mochi is telling him that she'll give him godlike powers if he just asks for them. Then it takes him a long time to think about it. Finally, he goes to her and says that he relies on himself and doesn't like to depend on anyone, but there's one thing he hasn't been able to get on his own. So he asks her for that ONE GIFT. Mochi freaks out because that's all he asks for from her. That he uses it to great effect is beside the point, it's still only a tiny bit of aid.
Oh, and I realized I just explained Toshi and Glissa and never answered the actual question.
Best: Jodah, Toshi
Worst: Gerrard, Karona

Garth One-Eye was the best. Except maybe his homless sidekick. The origional books were so much better as the reactions between characters seemed more realistic.
The best modern protagonist IMO is Urza. The entire OTJ-OLS charaters were great too.

Haddad was boring. Kamahl was a good character, too. If Elspeth decides to forsake her need for honor and takes Ajani as her pimp, she'll be a better character.
