Player A has a creature on the board. He goes to cast Rancor on it. Player B reponds and kills the creature. Does rancor go to the graveyard or back to his hand?
I believe Rancor goes to the graveyard since it was on the stack and not in play so the "goes back to your hand" ability won't trigger.

What's the ruling on this?
You are correct. Rancor never got to the battlefield because its target is now illegal. Since its target is gone, Rancor is countered and it goes from the stack to the graveyard.
You're right. Rancor went to the graveyard from the stack, not from the battlefield, so its return ability doesn't trigger.
And it is a ruling, you can read it on the link from your autocard: 6/8/2016 If the target of Rancor when it’s cast as a spell is an illegal target when Rancor tries to resolve, Rancor will be countered and put into its owner’s graveyard. It won’t return to its owner’s hand.
