I use Skirge Familiar's activated ability, discarding Dakmor Salvage to put B in my mana pool.
Gitrog triggers and I draw a card.
I choose to Dredge 2 with Dakmor Salvage.
Dakmor to hand, two cards into graveyard (if one's a land, draw another card)
Repeat.
But, if I'm hoping to retrace Syphon Life, Ulamog could shuffle it back into my library. For best results, should Discard with Skirge Familiar three times to get BBB, then a Syphon Life to minimize the shuffling of Syphon Life into my library?
When do I draw the card? Does the forest and ulamog hit the GY at the same time? Or do I shuffle then draw?
What happens to Syphon Life?
My Thought:
Syphon Life on the stack, The discard is part of the cost, triggering Gitrog. But Gitrog's ability doesn't go onto the stack until Syphon Life resolves (goes into the graveyard). I dredge 2, Dakmor to hand, I draw a card due to the forest, ulamog shuffles everything including Syphon Life into my library. No real way to save Syphon Life, besides keep the process going and get it back into my graveyard/hand.
No real way to save Syphon Life, besides keep the process going and get it back into my graveyard/hand.
Correct.
When do I draw the card?
After Syphon Life resolves, the Gitrog trigger and the Ulamog trigger go on the stack at the same time - you pick the order.
You can either draw then shuffle or shuffle then draw.
Does the forest and ulamog hit the GY at the same time? Or do I shuffle then draw?
They hit the GY at the same time, but you can choose to draw then shuffle by changing the way things go on the stack.
What happens to Syphon Life?
It's already resolved by the time you're drawing/shuffling so it'd end up being shuffled into your library.
I completely forgot that the discarding of Salvage was part of the cost of Syphon Life, so everything I said is wrong.

Actually, Syphon Life sticks around in this scenario. The statement that Gitrog's trigger doesn't hit the stack until Syphon Life has resolved is incorrect, as discarding the land (which is what triggers Gitrog) is part of the cost to cast the spell.
Here's what happens.
1. You begin the process of casting Syphon Life. This moves Syphon Life from the graveyard to the stack.
2. You go through the rest of the process of casting Syphon Life, including discarding Dakmor Salvage as part of the cost. This triggers Gitrog.
3. When you finish casting Syphon Life, players would get priority so Gitrog's trigger goes onto the stack (above Syphon Life.)
4. Gitrog's trigger resolves and you draw a card. You replace this with dredging Dakmor Salvage. Ulamog hits the graveyard and its ability triggers.
5. Players would get priority, so Ulamog's trigger goes onto the stack, still on top of Syphon Life.
6. Ulamog's trigger resolves and you shuffle your graveyard into your library. This doesn't include Syphon Life because it's still on the stack.
7. Finally, Syphon Life resolves, does its thing, and goes back to your graveyard.
Entomb searches for a card (ulamog) to put into graveyard to save my stuff from a bojuka bog, but then entomb hits the graveyard and is shuffled in and not exiled by Bojuka Bog.
Where as gitrog/dakmor salvage stuff are triggered. Is that the difference?
I don't want to just know the answer, I want to understand.
I feel like if I tried to pull these both off against someone, they'd say I can't have both things I want. not exiling entomb, but keeping Syphon life in my graveyard to continue that fun.
The thing with Entomb in the other thread is, that it is resolving. Ulamog's trigger goes off during its resolution, but is put on the stack only afterEntomb has finished, because triggers go on the stack the next time a player would receive priority, which in this case, is after the resolution and the check of state based actions.
In this thread's scenario, you're casting a spell (Syphon Life). And the very first thing you do when you cast a spell is to put it on the stack. Whatever triggers go off during the rest of the process of casting the spell, will be put on top of that spell, because after you cast a spell, if you had priority before, you gain priority afterwards. And as I said, triggers go on the stack the next time a player would receive priority.

Skirge Familiar
