So the question is, can that player choose to "not" change the target with Misdirection, or does that player have to change the target to the only valid target, which is himself ?

*Obvisiously the "right" move would be to let Misdirection resolve and then gain controll of your own Lavalanche, just to change its target back ; but thats not the question

Misdirection doesn't say "You may change the target ...." If Misdirection is still targeting the Lavalanche when it resolves and there is another valid target, the target of Lavalanche must be changed.

Why bother with mere rulings when so many answers can be found in the Rules?
114.6a If an effect allows a player to “change the target(s)” of a spell or ability, each target can be changed only to another legal target. If a target can’t be changed to another legal target, the original target is unchanged, even if the original target is itself illegal by then. If all the targets aren’t changed to other legal targets, none of them are changed.
Since Lavalanche requires a player as its only target, casting Misdirection on it will force you to change the target from the originally targeted player to some other player if possible. It's only if it's impossible to do so when the original target is unchanged.

How to use card tags (please use them for everybody's sanity)
[c]Lightning Bolt[/c] -> Lightning Bolt
[c=Lightning Bolt]Apple Pie[/c] -> Apple Pie
Vowels-Only Format Minimum deck size: 60 Maximum number of identical cards: 4 Ban list: Cards whose English names begin with a consonant, Unglued and Unhinged cards, cards involving ante, Ancestral Recall
For the record, note that gaining control of the Lavalanche isn't the only way to use the Commandeer to avoid taking thirty. You could also just target Misdirection with Commandeer, then change Misdirection's target to be Commandeer. Misdirection will then fizzle, as Commandeer will be in the 'yard by the time Misdirection resolves.
Spells can target objects on top of them in the stack, which is cray cray and seems like cheating but it's something I learned in this rules forum.
During the resolution of commandeer after you gain control of misdirect, you also get to change the target of misdirect. Since commandeer is resolving i is currently on the stack and thus will be a legal choice to change misdirect to. Note misdirect will now just fizzle for illegal target when it goes to resolve.

Player A plays a big Lavalanche (like X=30) and targets the opponent.
Player B plays Misdirection, targeting that Lavalanche (with the intention to go for the opponent itself).
Player A plays Commandeer (pitched) to gain controll of Misdirection.

Theres clearly no may and it doesnt really state to "change to another target" , just that it has to be changed.
