I cast Spinning Darkness on my Eager Cadet, but my opponent responds by casting Electrickery to deal 1 damage and kill the Cadet. Do I still gain the 3 life from Spinning Darkness?
Would it make a difference as to whether I cast Spinning Darkness via its mana cost (4BB) or its alternate cost (exiling the top three black cards from my graveyard)?
You do not gain the life, and it does not matter how the cost was paid. A spell is countered on resolution if it had targets, and all of its targets are illegal when it attempts to resolve. Targeting a nonexistent object is always illegal. So Spinning Darkness is countered.
