I am having trouble understanding the purpose of the 2nd ability of Kruphix, God of Horizons. I've read from other forums that somehow unused mana can be stored in the mana pool after your turn ends. I thought that your mana pool empties out at the end of your turn.
So, what is it that I am not understanding? And how does Kruphix, God of Horizons fit into this?
It's a replacement ability. Instead of emptying, the mana in your mana pool becomes colorless. This means you can carry mana over from one turn to another, but all the mana you carry over can only be spent on colorless mana costs.
Alright... just to clarify, instead emptying out of the mana pool at the end of the turn, the mana becomes colorless and stays in the mana pool for the rest of the game (if unused). Yes?
e.g. At the end of my turn, my unused GG becomes 2, and it stays in the mana pool for as long as I do not use it.
I have not heard about this specific kind of ruling before.
Mostly correct. At the end of each step and phase, the remaining mana will become colourless and will not empty from your mana pool for as long as you control Kruphix.
Ah. So as long as you control the card, the mana does not empty out. Thanks for the responses.
Definitely seems like a serious threat. Will need to eliminate Kruphix, God of Horizons quickly, especially when untapped lands are tapped during your opponent's turns.
The key thing is that when you're dealing with replacement effects, the replaced event never happens. With Kruphix this means "unused mana empties from your mana pool" doesn't ever happen while you control him.
Btw, to be exact, the ability that talks about mana is its fourth ability.

Mana pools don't only empty at the end of turn, but at the end of every phase and step (there are at least 11 of those during a turn, possibly more if there are eg. first strikers attacking.) Kruphix's replaces the emptying with the mana becoming colorless (and thus it stays in your mana pool.)
Ahhhhh I see I see. Looks like I need to read more about the rules Thanks
Just getting back into it.. But isn't that the mana burn rule that is obsolete in 2010. Mana DOES transfer, I'm looking to put this in my mazes end with sphinxes and Aurelia's fury for mass bombs all day on top of the turbo fog
Mana empties at the end of every step and phase. The 2010 change added the "every step" part - it used to only end at the end of each phase, so you could float mana for the entirety of combat (which you can no longer do). And of course the other change was that you no longer lose life when the mana goes away.
Mana has never carried over through turns.

It's just an alternate form of upwelling.
