Hi! I have a question dealing with sacrificing. I'm wanting to combo fume spitter with crumbling ashes for some easy removal. Thing is I'm not 100% on sacrificing mechanics yet. Here goes: If I declare the spitter as a blocker can I sacrifice it before the damage phase? If so, will the block go through preventing damage to me? And then will I be able to place the -1/-1 counter?
Thanks a bunch!

If, during the declare blockers step ("before damage"), you sacrifice a Fume Spitter that's blocking, under most circumstances the attacker will not assign any damage to you in the combat damage step, since it is still a blocked creature. If the attacker has trample, it will assign damage as though the Fume Spitter never blocked it.
