I've tried searching the forums to no avail, and was hoping someone could clarify a rules issue I ran into today.
My opponent cast Journey to Nowhere on my creature. I cast Oblivion Ring on the Journey to Nowhere. I cast another creature, and it too was met by a Journey to Nowhere. Later, I cast Planar Cleansing, which destroyed his second Journey and my O-ring. I know that the second creature and the first Journey to Nowhere now reenter play - my question is in what order, if any? Is my opponent able to use his now recovered Journey to exile my creature, or is there a way that my creature will be able to avoid yet another trip to the removed-from-game zone?
They will all re-enter the battlefield at the same time. When his Journey to Nowhere does, its EtB trigger will trigger again and he will be able to exile your creature.
They will all re-enter the battlefield at the same time.
They will not enter at the same time. The triggered abilities of the journey and the O-ring both got on the stack in APNAP (Active Player Non-Active Player) order, since you cast Planar Cleansing, it must be your turn. So your trigger (O-ring) will go on the stack first, then your opponent's (Journey).
Objects on the stack resolve in FOIL (First In Last Out) order, so the trigger from the journey will resolve first and return your creature to the battlefield, then your O-ring trigger will resolve and return their journey.
The journey's ability will trigger and your opponent then chooses a target, which will presumably be your recently returned creature.
Fun Fact: If you somehow manage to cast the cleansing on your opponents turn, the opposite will happen and you will get your creature back after their journey has returned and tried to exile something.
