I was up against the judge at zendikar prerelease today and he had Chandra unleashed out and I put in Vampire Hexmage and my intention of course was to sac it to remove loyalty counters from Chandra and kill her, however he's the judge and he said and said that the counters on chandra weren't counters by the rules of the game, but instead just loyalty.
I just agreed with him at the time because I was going to win anyways, plus he was the judge so I assumed he's right, and he probably is, it's just when I was reading the rules on planeswalkers i always thought it said planeswalkers enter the field with loyalty counters. Whats the ruling, can hexmage 1HKO planeswalkers?
Yes, the counters are loyalty counters. Vampire Hexmage removes all of them, and the the planeswalker is put into the graveyard as a state-based effect

Abilities exist independently of their source. It's like shooting a guy after he throws a grenade. The grenade is still coming. But if you remove the target, the ability is countered upon resolution. It's like a grenade, if the guy you threw your grenade at disappears, it won't explo.... wait what?

Take your monoblack deck, then set aside 14 swamps. Add 4 Creeping Tar Pits, 4 Darkslick Shores, 4 Drowned Catacombs, and 2 Jwar isle Refuge and add 4 Jace, the Mindsculptors. Your monoblack deck is instantly better. Better yet, drop those refuges, throw in some islands and some mana leaks, and lo and behold, you're now playing a real deck. Congratulations. Welcome to the world of competitive M:TG.

Much more problematic than the incorrect ruling is the fact that he played in the event he judged. That's not allowed yet.

That could be a problem, presuming he was actually judging and not just a certified judge playing in the event. (We do that from time to time.) Without knowing the full circumstances of what occurred, I would reserve judgment on making any comments about anything that occurred. Note: A judge playing in an event they were actively judging should create an error report when submitted to the DCI. If that happened, it will be detected on the DCI's end and dealt with accordingly.
If the OP believes something improper occurred, then John Carter should be emailed. He can be contacted through the Judge Center.
Judges are not able to play in an event they are judging. If the judge isn't on the event stuff they can play. But a judge playing in an event should be calling a judge on the staff of the event for rules disputes rather than answering the question themselves. Note: This changes October 1st, and judges will be able to play in Regular REL events they are judging (such as Prereleases).
I think the most unfortunate thing about this is that it was pre-discussed in the Zendikar faq. If it's not the case that the judge was playing in his own event (which until next week is a problem unto itself) then this is a prime example of why one shouldn't trust ones opponents to provide the correct rulings. Call the event staff to answer rules questions.

well I beat the guy 2-1 anyways and finished 2-2 overall if the game cost me first place or anything I'd go back to the store and see what they can do, and I don't think the guy was cheating he just didn't know but if he's judge he would have just overturned it if another guy said something different probably. Now I know atleast, thanks guys, I knew it said loyalty counters, I just assumed the judge knew the official ruling. This guy works behind the counter so I don't want him to lose his job or anything, no big deal. I assume incompetence too, he wasn't a mean or cheating type of guy. I said I was going to get one of the pro kids who go to big events to ask but he said he was judge anyways-lol now that I think of it maybe he was trying to cheat, who knows, w/e
and yeh ravenseye it was during the official event

Or just mistaken. Why jump to that conclusion? Couldn't he just be a ****** judge?

That must be what I have seen.
I'd assume incompetence over malice.

(which in no way absolves them of misconduct, but explains how such an easy rule question could be flubbed.)
