Ok, so me and a couple friends are playing and its really late and this situation comes up and we're all on different pages:
Person A has Lord of Extinction with Vampiric Link on it and he attacks person B (for lethal damage!) who has an untapped Stonehewer Giant as an available blocker.
Person B wants to declare his Giant as a blocker then tap it and get an artifact without losing any life or losing his creature. Is this possible?
If he taps the stonehewer giant and somehow pulls it out of combat, then sure, it will live. But tapping a creature after it's been declared as a blocker doesn't pull it out of combat. If he somehow manages to get the giant out of combat, Lord of Extinction was still considered blocked, so as long as it doesn't gain trample, the Lord won't be dealing any damage to him.

A card game about Presidents. Stabbing each other. With knives.
Are you thinking that tapped blockers don't deal or recieve damage? If so that is false. The Giant will still be blocking the Lord of Extinction and will still take damage.
So player B can essentially block and fetch a Sword of Light and Shadow and receive no damage to himself or his creature? Yes, we were wondering whether tapped blockers could still block under the m10 rules.
Another player pulled out a magazine that said that once blockers were declared, no spells or abilities could be played, so we pulled out the m10 rule cards we had lying around and then we just didn't know where to look anymore.

Yes, he can block and then grab a sword of light and shadow and survive just fine. The Lord will deal no damage.

There's a gross misconception about the M10 rules changes that spells and abilities may not be played after blockers are declared.
This is NOT true. After blockers are declared, each player will receive priority in turn and can cast spells and activate abilities. When all players have passed priority, then the game will move to the combat damage step where combat damage will be assigned and dealt. After combat damage is dealt, players receive priority again before the next step.
