I really should know this but - when during a turn does mana pools empty? I know mainphases they do ... how about Upkeep, or Combat? Comprehensive rules is so long I did not know where to start.
Actually can you just tell me everytime it does during a turn?

When light no longer rose to kiss me,
I swore to tear Heaven asunder
As flights of fallen angels wished me
Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder.
Thanks Magus of the Sheep for this great border!

That would be, end of the draw step, end of main phase 1, end of combat, end of main phase 2 and end of turn. If you would like a more detailed description of the phases/steps of a turn, let me know.

Minineko is 100% correct. Just to prevent any confusion, it is important to note that the 'end of turn' that he speaks of is not the End of Turn step, but the Cleanup step, which is the last step of the turn.
And sometimes you'll have two or more Cleanup steps, so your mana pool could empty more than once during your End Phase. Superfluous information is my greatest enemy, because I never get that stuff right

Oh wow that sucks! This whole time i did not know that. I always thought that your mana pool emptied at the end of your turn.
so if i say, have a land with fertile ground on it. I attack and tap my fertile ground creating a red mana for a shock to a blocker. Then i want to play a llanowar elves from my hand with the 1 green mana i have. But I can't? It would just mana burn me for one once the combat phase is over?

Yup. Unless you had some way of playing the Llanowar Elves during your combat phase, you would burn baby burn.

as said before you can not do this unless you have a vedleken orrary (sp?) or the like. you can however cast the instant during your main phase during before or after the elfs.
