I've recently made my own commander deck and am stumped on the legality of a specific scenario. If I were to be attacked by a creature and I cast Gideon's Sacrifice and chose Souls of the Faultless as my chosen permanent, is the damage dealt a new source stemming from the instant spell or does it count as combat damage? Basically would the Souls of the Faultless ability trigger?
I read up a little bit on damage redirection but I'm unsure if Gideon's Sacrifice would even be considered a redirection. I just want to know if it would still be considered combat damage at that point. Thanks for your time.
Yes, Gideon's Sacrifice creates a damage redirection effect. A kind of replacement effect that makes damage that would be dealt to something be dealt to something else. If that damage is dealt by an attacking or blocking creature in the combat damage turn based action, it is combat damage, the source is that creature. So Souls of the Faultless does trigger.
