This came up in a recent cube session. I feel like I basically do know this but...during the game it happened, my brain was melting a little trying to figure this out.
I cast Kitesail Freebooter. It enters the battlefield and its trigger goes on the stack.
My opponent casts, in response to the trigger, Swords to Plowshares targetting my Freebooter who is there to target (becuase he is in play.)
The targeted player still reveals their hand. You still choose a card, but nothing happens to that card because this "one-shot duration" has already expired. (CR 610.3a)
Of course, before that, Swords exiles the Pirate and you gain life equal to its power.

How does this nonsense resolve, exactly?
