What happens if an effect - such as Defense of the Heart's triggered ability successfully resolving - were to make it so that a Kodama of the East Tree enters the battlefield at the same time as another permanent? Is it possible to make it so that the Kodama of the East Tree's triggered ability triggers from the other creature entering the battlefield resulting in a third permanent (of lesser cmc than the other creature's) entering the battlefield with them? If no then why not?
ETB triggers are normal triggered abilities, and thus are checked after the event that triggers them. This means, that the game state is checked when all the permanents are on the battlefield already. So the Kodama sees every permanent entering the battlefield alongside it and triggers accordingly. No shennanigans needed, this is just how the game works.
603.6a Enters-the-battlefield abilities trigger when a permanent enters the battlefield. These are written, “When [this object] enters the battlefield, . . . ” or “Whenever a [type] enters the battlefield, . . .” Each time an event puts one or more permanents onto the battlefield, all permanents on the battlefield (including the newcomers) are checked for any enters-the-battlefield triggers that match the event.
