I'm a bit confused. I've been musing about a Brion Stoutarm EDH deck for a bit, and everything I've seen floating around the net suggests that his fling effect counts as commander damage - but in the offical rules thread of this forum it states
"If a player has been dealt 21 points of combat damage by a particular Commander during the game, that player loses a game."
Meaning NO, Brion's fling ability will not add to commander damage.
And yes - tons of deck techs and internet posts out there claiming his ability counts for commander damage since it states that Brion is the one doing the damage. (Ignoring that it is only combat damage)
Only combat damage dealt by commanders matters for the purposes of a state-based action added in the traditional Commander variant (C.R. 903.10a). Whatever damage is dealt when Brion Stoutarm's activated ability resolves is not combat damage, even if a commander deals that damage (compare C.R. 120.2b, which describes damage due to an effect, with C.R. 120.2a, which describes combat damage). More generally, whatever damage is dealt while any spell or ability is resolving is not combat damage, even if that damage is dealt by a commander or during the combat phase. See also this thread.

This would suggest that brion's fling ability will not win the game at 21 damage, as it is not combat damage.
Can someone clear this up?
