If I am trying to counter a spell with patron wizard's ability can I do it in drips and drabs or must I do it all at once?
Like, Lets say I have patron wizard on the field with 4 other wizards and my opponent has cast a 4cc spell and has 3 mana left untapped.
Can I tap one wizard to counter the spell , and then once they pay the 1 tap another, and so on... or do I have to see that he can potentially pay 3 and tap all 4 or my wizards at once to be sure that I am countering the spell.
Regardless of how many wizards you tap you are actually activating the ability over and over again. You tap the first wizard and the ability "counter unless pay 1" goes on the stack. You can respond to this with another activation or you can let it resolve and see if the opponent pays. Then you tap another wizard to activate the ability again, and again see if the opponent pays for the spell. You can repeat this process until you either run out of wizards or the spell is countered.
Remember that items on the stack resolve one at a time and each player is able to respond after each item is placed on or removed from the stack.

Hope that makes sense...
