Chandra's outrage does 4 damage to cheif and 2 damage to player. Chief has the triggered ability of whenever you lose life for first time gain +1/+1 token.
Since it was played and was first damage, how does the "and" damage of Outrage resolve with the triggered abilty effect and determining if Warchief dies or becomes a 4/4 with +1/+1 counter on it?
We went with he dies, but curious and a bit naggy that we're wrong since the time off has us rusty on resolution.
Vengeful Warchief does indeed die. Creatures die to lethal damage due to something called state-based actions, which occur automatically whenever a player receives priority. Triggered abilities, by contrast, need to trigger and then resolve to do anything, which makes them much slower than state-based actions.
When Outrage starts resolving, it resolves fully. It deals 4 damage to the Warchief, then 2 damage to the player. Warchief's ability triggers but doesn't do anything yet.
Outrage finishes resolving and is put on the graveyard.
Then, state-based actions are performed, and Warchief is destroyed due to the damage it received.
Then, Warchief's ability is put on the stack. It won't do anything when it resolves because Warchief is not on the battlefield at this point.
