My opponent attacked with a Animar, Soul of Elements with several thousand +1/+1 counters on it when I had a Souls of the Faultless out. I cast Martyrdom to redirect the combat damage to my souls. He claimed because Animar was pro white and black I could not do this. Was he correct?
No, he was not. Animar isn't getting targeted by anything here. Martyrdom only targets the Souls initially, and then the ability it grants to the Souls only targets you as the player who would be dealt damage. While your Souls can't block Animar or deal damage to it, it can be dealt damage by it just fine, and it will trigger accordingly.
