My opponent played a Metamorphic Alteration on my Runaway Steam-Kin and somehow misplayed it and chose the Steam-Kin as the creature to be copied. But after that I couldn't activate it's ability to remove the counters and get mana. I'm thinking this might be a bug or am I not understanding some rule correctly?
In this case the Steam-Kin being a copy of itself does essentially nothing; it still has all its abilities. Thus what you've encountered appears to be a bug.
