First time posting here so here goes. I was playing against a friend of mine recently and we ran into a situation that we weren't sure what would happen.
I had only 4 life left.
I already have Spear of Heliod on the battle field.
He already has Harsh Mentor on the battle field.
I cast Quarry Colossus onto the battle field.
In what order would those 3 cards abilities take effect if played like this?
Thank you.
I don't understand what you think is happening so I will try to answer but you may need to fill in some gaps:
When Colossus enters, it triggers and you can then put a creature into its owner's library. Neither the Spear nor the Mentor do anything here. It sounds like you think Harsh Mentor will trigger because Colossus triggered. It won't since nothing on the Colossus is activated; it is just triggered.
The only thing I can think of as to the relevance of the Spear is that you think that "creatures you control get +1/+1" will also cause Harsh Mentor to trigger. It will not since this is not an activated ability either. It is a static ability. The only thing Harsh Mentor cares about in this situation is if you chose to activate Spear's second ability that destroys a creature. That is the only activated ability here.
Rules on Activated, Triggered, and Static abilities:
602.1. Activated abilities have a cost and an effect. They are written as "[Cost]: [Effect.] [Activation instructions (if any).]"
602.1a. The activation cost is everything before the colon (:). An ability's activation cost must be paid by the player who is activating it.
603.1. Triggered abilities have a trigger condition and an effect. They are written as "[When/Whenever/At] [trigger condition or event], [effect]. [Instructions (if any).]"
604.1. Static abilities do something all the time rather than being activated or triggered. They are written as statements, and they're simply true.
I'm so sorry. We did not realize that those were different from each other. Thank you so much for clarifying it for us.it looks like we were both wrong. Lol. Thank you again.
