Game already finished, but I’d like to know for future. EDH format.
Opponent has frenetic efreet, Zndrsplt, eye of wisdom and laboratory maniac in play. Opponent activates frenetic ability effectively infinite times to coincide with drawing his deck out via his commander’s ability to draw on flips. In response to first activation of Frenetic Efreet ability I play beast within targeting his lab man.
Opponents thinks he can just activate frenetic repeatedly and my instant will not resolve. Is he correct? More importantly, it’d be good to get clarification on how the abilities are stacked and whether there is a window to respond here or not.
You don't have priority until it is passed. He can stack the efreet's ability as many times as he wants before passing priority to let them start resolving. You may attempt to respond to all of them on the stack after, but, he can simply respond by putting another (basically) infinite number of activations on the stack from efreet.
What you CAN do is let the first one resolve (phasing or killing the efreet), then respond to the next one by killing lab maniac with beast within. At this point, the efreet is no longer in play to be activated and the Zndrsplt player will be forced to draw out if they do not have an answer.
You can let one frenetic efreet activation resolve, at which point the efreet will either be dead or phased out. You can then kill either the Zndrsplt or the maniac and he can't respond with more flips at that point because the efreet isn't around anymore.
Thanks for the clarity. In the situation the opponent acted like it was a done deal which didn’t seem right. I guess I just wanted clarity on who gets priority and when in this situation, as it’s fairly often people play these interactions without a good understanding of stack interactions and priority.
