So I was at FNM, and just for the heck of it, I decided to try playing lands in front. someone told me that there had been a ruling that lands had to be played in the back, it was the only place they could be played unless swinging with a manland. is that the case? if so, when did that change? I was used to it being annoying but totally legal.

Project Booster Fun makes it less fun to open a booster.
Players in Competitive and Professional Rules Enforcement Level matches must arrange their cards, tokens, and
other accessories on the battlefield using the following layout:
• From the player’s perspective, nonlands must be kept closer to the player’s opponent than lands, and
no non-land cards should be between the land area and the edge of the table closest to the player.
However, FNM is Regular REL, so it doesn't matter.

There is such a rule, but it exists for consistent filmed coverage, and doesn't apply at lower-level games.

As of the Dominaria set, this now applies to all games in Comp/Pro, not just video-coverage games.
