Hi, we are playing some casual games with some old cards that we plan to make into a duel decks of sorts for teaching beginners. During a playtest, my friend attacks with a Grizzly Bears, I block with Giant Octopus.. he responds by Giant Growth on the bear, in response I boomerang the bear. Do my Giant Octopus still take 5 damage or not?
Depends on the step. Did this all happen during the declare blockers step? If so, there's no attacking creature that the Octopus is blocking during the combat damage step, so no damage is dealt.
Yeah, all happened in the declare blockers step.. when I blocked the grizzly with octopus. We are old-school players who for a long time followed the rule where creatures that left the battlefield still dealt combat damage to the other creature. I think there was a rules update to that years ago.. where creatures that got hit by a bounce spell no longer dealt combat damage. Decided to ask here just to be sure.

That was never a rule. In fact, the Revised rulebook (1994) had a combat example in which an attacking creature got killed before combat damage and therefore dealt none.

Why bother with mere rulings when so many answers can be found in the Rules?

Actually, that depends on when the creature left. Damage used to go on the stack (ended about 5 years ago), and at that time, there was a very narrow window between assigning damage and it happening. You could assign damage with a Sakura-Tribe Elder and then sac it for the land ability and still get both. Which means if, under those rules, someone waited until damage assignment to kill a creature, it would still deal its damage. But why would you wait until that point? Kill it before damage assignment. Of course, this is all moot now, but the OP did say they were running old rules - it just sounds like they ran them wrong.

The boomerang was cast in response to the giant growth. I see now.. so I guess the bear never became a 5/5.

Thanks for pointing that out. I think there was even an article from WoTC about that rules change.. although I cannot find it anymore. The rules change weakened cards like Fleeting Image.. because it can no longer assign damage to the creature it blocked if Fleeting Image used it's return to hand ability.

If the Boomerang was a response to the Giant Growth, the Grizzly Bears was a 2/2 creature for its entire time on the battlefield.
