Situation:
My opponent casts lightning bolt during his turn, then passed priority to me. I used aether vial to cast kabira evangel to hopefully protect my creature. Then he said the protect trigger ability will have to wait until his lighning bolt resolves because i cant put another spell or ability on stack while it is resolving. Is it correct? Sorry for the noob question. Thanks
Your opponent is wrong. While not being able to cast a spell during the resolution of another spell is technically correct, you are well within your ability to protect a targeted ally when Aether Vial puts (not cast, so it can't be countered by counterspells that don't target abilities) Kabira Evangel onto the battlefield. The stack resolves last in, first out, one spell or ability at a time. It'll go like this:
1. Your opponent casts Lightning Bolt, targeting an ally you control.
2. You activate your vial, putting its activated ability onto the stack.
3. Vial resolves, putting the evangel onto the battlefield.
4. With bolt still on the stack, evangel will trigger.
5. Evangel's trigger resolves, granting protection from red.
6. Lightning bolt will attempt to resolve and be countered on resolution due to its target being illegal.
