Hey everyone. I've been trying to find an answer for this, but I haven't been able to find a a straight forward answer.
If I enchant an opponents swamp with Genju of the Fens can I then activate its ability to turn it into a creature to then destroy it with Ramses Overdark? Or can only the person who controls the swamp activate the ability?
I'm just not sure how owner vs controller rules work here and this would really make or break the card being included into the deck.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide! I'll reference this thread if this ruling ever comes up with my friends.
Genju of the Fens's "controller is separate from the enchanted [creature's] controller ...; the two need not be the same. ... Only the Aura's controller", not necessarily its owner, "can activate its abilities. However, if the Aura grants an ability to the enchanted [creature] ..., the enchanted [creature's] controller", again, not necessarily its owner, "is the only one who can activate that ability" (C.R. 303.4e; under C.R. 602.2, an object's activated ability can generally be activated only by the object's controller or, lacking a controller, its owner; see also C.R. 113.8).
Therefore, you can activate the second ability of Genju of the Fens, since you still control the Aura even if it's attached to a Swamp another player controls. Moreover, when that ability resolves—
the enchanted Swamp will become a creature, making it a legal target for Ramses Overdark's ability since it's an "enchanted creature" (C.R. 108.1, 115.1c, 303.4b; see also C.R. 205.2b), and
the enchanted Swamp will gain an ability — here, "B: This creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn" — that only the Swamp's controller can activate (C.R. 602.2).
EDIT (Sep. 3, 2019): Add rule citation. Some rules were renumbered with Core Set 2020.
