So one of my edh groups is allowing me to run Masticore as a commander, and I was wanting to plug Assault Suit in the deck as a possible way to stop the upkeep-discard/sac requirement.
Will this work the way I want? I can just skip over the discard/sac if Masticore has Assault Suit equipped to it?
"Do X unless you do Y" is equivalent to "You may do Y. If you don't, do X" so the choice is not between sacrifice and discard, but between discarding and not discarding. The sacrifice would just be a consequence for the later choice. So trying to sacrifice the creature when not being able to is not an impossible choice (which you could not choose if it were one), but only an impossible instruction (which is simply ignored).

You can still discard a card if you want to, but if you don't Masticore isn't sacrificed.
