I turn Mairsil into an aura with the Licid ability (so he is now attached to a creature).
I'm confident I can use the Cranial Plating ability to move Mairsil between two creatures.
Can I use the Demonspine Whip ability to buff the enchanted creature? It says "equipped creature" and Mairsil is not an equipment, but he is attached.
Follow-up: If I also somehow cage Sunforger (maybe it's a five-color deck with Mairsil in the 99), activating the Sunforger ability while Mairsil is an aura would cause him to be put in the graveyard as a state-based action (since he's an aura not attached to anything), correct? And, since detaching Sunforger-Mairsil is part of the cost, there's no way to also end the Licid ability in time to both save him and activate Sunforger?

The first two questions are yes, because of this rule:
301.5e An ability of a permanent that refers to the “equipped creature” refers to whatever creature that permanent is attached to, even if the permanent with the ability isn’t an Equipment.
And yes, if you choose to unattach Mairsil, it ends up as an aura that's not attached to anything, and goes to the graveyard. You will not be able to end the effect (and make it stop being an aura) in time to save it.

Scientists have calculated that the chance of anything so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one. But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.
