Let's say I Fling my Pack Rat token. It goes to the graveyard, where it immediately seizes to exist. However, it still goes to the graveyard, and it is an artifact because of the lattice, so it triggers Scrap Trawler. Scrap Trawler sees that the Pack Rat token has (had?) a CMC=2, since it has copied this characteristic from the original pack rat. I may return the Chromatic Star to my hand, since it is an artifact with a CMC of less than 2.
* You cast Fling, choosing a creature or player as its target, then sacrificing the Pack Rat token copy as part of its cost.
* The token goes to the graveyard and was an artifact, so Scrap Trawler's ability triggers.
* You finish casting Fling. Before you gain priority again, state-based actions are checked, making the token cease to exist.
* Then you put Scrap Trawler's ability on the stack. The pack rat token had a CMC of 2, so you choose Chromatic Star as its target.
* Eventually, Trawler's ability resolves, returning the Star.
* Later, Fling resolves, dealing damage equal to the token's power at the moment it was sacrificed, to whatever creature or player you targeted.
To continue the discussion, what if in the above example we exchange the Pack Rat and the token with a Clone copying a Karplusan Giant? Let's further assume I have a Jester's Mask in my graveyard in addition to the star. Again I use Fling, this time sacrificing my clone, and Scrap Trawler's ability resolves. Will I be able to return the Mask, since the Clone had a CMC of 7 when it was sacrificed, or will the Scrap Trawler see the CMC=4 of the Clone card that is in my graveyard (meaning I can only get the star)?
I'm asking because I believe there are some instances where when the rules are looking for "X" and they find nothing, then they use "the last known value for X". In the case of the clone, there would now be a value for "X" for it to see.. wouldn't it?

You use the CMC of the creature as it last existed on the battlefield. As per the Ruling on Gatherer:
09/02/2017 - The target artifact card must have a lesser converted mana cost than the artifact that caused Scrap Trawler’s ability to trigger by being put into a graveyard. Use the artifact’s converted mana cost as it last existed on the battlefield to determine what may be returned.
So in your Clone example, as it existed on the battlefield it had a CMC of 7, so you will be able to get back the Jester's Mask.

I have Scrap Trawler, Pack Rat, a Pack Rat token and Mycosynth Lattice in play. I have a Chromatic Star in my graveyard.
Let's say I Fling my Pack Rat token. It goes to the graveyard, where it immediately seizes to exist. However, it still goes to the graveyard, and it is an artifact because of the lattice, so it triggers Scrap Trawler. Is this all correct?
