So a few months ago I decided to come back to MTG. I've been out since 2008-09 and my old cards were given to other people. I started back and purchased a booster set from Dominaria, The Brothers War and then Streets of Capenna. So, I'm curious, do you all think the Remastered set that drops on 1/13 would be a good thing for me to pick up and build my collection back up? My initial thought is yes, considering there are so many old cards getting new versions and such.
It depends on your mtg goals.
If you plan to play commander, standard or modern, you would be better off buying singles. If you just want to collect cards in general, you could buy an assortment of different packs like jumpstart or whatever catches your interest.
There are other formats like pauper which only has commons as legal cards (depending on where they were printed, some commons aren't legal).

I typically just play Kitchen Table Format, if it's a printed magic card, it can be used. I do enjoy the collecting aspect quite a bit too. At this point I'm looking to build my collection up and thought maybe this would be a good way to get some cards from older sets.
You could always just buy an assortment of cards from starcitygames or from your local game store.
The cheapest way to get back in to mtg is to buy singles. If your group plays commander/EDH, I would start off with one of the preconstructed decks.

Ive picked up again as well after having played for 10 years (before I didn't play for nearly 18 years...) and must say Im having fun. Ive appreciated the Brothers war range and specifically the Jumpstart boosters. They all give fun cards for the decks I already had and am building. Remastered so far was a bit of a let down based on the cards I pulled from the boosters, perhaps as well since there is too much melancholy involved to get cards from 'back in the old days' and not getting them The new Phyrexia set that is coming has my hopes high though. At the end of they day, its a fun game and you take out of sets what you want to take. If you dont like some, leave them to the side, other sets might.
And never give away your cards...ever...I did so with my alpha/revised cards and am sorry still since that day...especially when finding out WHAT I gave away...
