Also, since I'm just getting started in the game, I'm curious -- is it common for the lands to run in one panoramic picture, or was that just an Eldrazi thing?
As for my personal fav ... I know Ravnica is pretty standard as far as "best land" goes but man, this island! The perspective, the colors, it's just so incredible ...
Anyway, are there any other sets that have good lands?
The eldrazi land set was a singular occurrence. Terese Nielsen's Guru land series are widely considered some of if not the best looking land as well as being likely the most expensive basic land's. I myself tend to prefer the mirage and visions lands. I really liked the African theme most of it had. The zebra's on the plains really struck me. Oh and for the wow factor I would go with unglued lands backed up by foil unhinged lands. Those are just so so so nice.
Eldrazi wasn't first to do panoramic lands. Kamigawa did, and scars block had 6 panel panoramics with 4 in SoM and 2 in MBS that line up, though thats after rise.
Personally no artist in mtg does lands better than John Avon, whose work is good enough to be framed on my wall (unhinged forest poster) and non magic players are just amazed by it.
For me it's between the full art Zendikar lands, the Lorwyn lands, and actually the more "bright and cheerful" of the AVR lands. I prefer my lands alive and full of color.
Depends on the deck. For example having 20 Tempest mountains in your Sligh/Red Deck Wins/Burn deck is one of the coolest looking and nostalgic looks in Magic.

When you say "this island," to which Island are you referring?
I like mirrodin 1.0 plains probably the most, especially this one, though the uncommon ravnica block lands (by the same artist) also look fantastic.

BTW Panoramic lands:
Mirage (Plains and Swamp only are panoramic - and only 2 cards)
Kamigawa (4 of a single type connect)
Lorwyn (pair of lands pair up to correspond to a tribe, e.g. a Island and Swamp for fairies)
Rise of the Eldrazi (as you said)
Scars of Mirrodin are panoramic.
anyway my favorite lands are Mirage Lands, except for the Forests in which my favorite single Forest art is from Innistrad by James Paick.
