I think one of the best lifegain cards is the creature Kambal, Consul of Allocation.
2:3 for 1 colorless mana., 1 white mana, and 1 black mana
Ability: When your opponent casts a noncreature spell, your opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.
Great for blue players all spellsie and whatnot
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Archangel of Thune. And did anyone mention Felidar Sovereign? Downright brutal, those two cards are.
There's also Blind Obedience, Elixir of Immortality, Blessed Alliance, Exile, and Solemn Offering.
I agree with one of the other commenters (and my best deck by far is a life gain deck) that life gain in and of itself isn't all that valuable unless it's a card that gives you life gain over and over like Staff of the Sun Magus or Soul Net. It's the cards that gain you life and/or trigger an advantage or ability from life gain and do something(s) else that are really nasty.

It starts as a 0:3 defender with an ability of when it blocks you gains three life. Mark of the vampire gives enchanted creature +2:+2 and lifelink
so whenever enchanted pride guardian blocks, you gain five life
Best commander is easily Oloro, Ageless Ascetic.
