I prefer sort of the between the 2. I love building a synergetic deck with/without combos. But if I were to choose between the two... solo. Just so none of my cards are dead cards, they all have uses majority of the time.

The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions. - Lord Alfred Tennyson
Yes, all cards in decks i play should be playable in their own right and any combos between individual cards are just bonus's. a good example of the principle is the old school type 2 psychatog decks, al the cards in the deck are useful by themselves for instance upheaval is a good emergency reset(and sometimes had to be used as one) and psychatog is a good creature on its own, the upheaval float mana psychatog combo is great but it doesn't detract from the ability to use either card individually.
Definately have to prefer cards that are good by themselves. The less dependent they are on other cards making them good the better they are. The whole Psycatog deck is a very excellent example there Machius.
Combo. I'm a total Johnny. Having an aggro deck and piloting that deck to a win is e-z. Trying to get all the combo pieces to fall into place is awesome.
Id say a deck like affinity or U/g madness would be best but its hard to say because combo decks are always the most powerfull
Trix, Oath, Tinker all were abusrdly powerful combo decks I suppose trix could have tossed out a Illusions of Grandeur to gain 20 life quick but I doubt so with out some way to get a donate or at least win the game at hand
Replenish would probably be the most powerful synergistic deck there is I wouldnt call it a combo deck since it could just play good enchantments and control the board till it dropped Opal.
I'm a bigger fan of combo cards, cause I like to find all of the different interactions...note I'm not referring to cards like Ravager which combo with 50,000 different cards :tongue2:

Lies! -I'm Buffy Summers, town tracker. I used my ability on you and saw that you didn't use any abilities before the game started. My flavor is I was sucked through a mysterious space-time portal and I'm here to kill all the vampires, and my tracking ability is a combination of my Slayer and Native American skills.
If you use too many combo pieces, you run the risk of a) not pulling it off, or b) someone recognizing the deck too early and waiting for that vital piece to hit the table and BOOM!, defeating the combo.
If you don't use any combo pieces at all, you're really missing the boat on maximizing any given card's true potential. Chances are, there's something out there that would compliment it. It also represents a true disadvantage if you're up against someone who IS playing a deck with some synergy among its cards.
Most of my decks have, if not outright combos, SOME synergy among the various elements.
I've never been a huge combo fan. To me it's boring playing a deck solely to get some amazingly powerful combo in play and then winning automatically. I like my games to be a bit different each time. That said, I do prefer that most of the cards in a deck have good synergy, but not ones that combine for huge combos.

-In first place in the competition is Donut. Next is a wrench, and a skull in 3rd. In 5th place is Griff.
-5th!? Do I even want to know who's in 4th?
-4th is reserved for any late entries who would obviously be better than you... such as a turd or a turd farmer.
i prefer combo, simply for the pure joy that is topdecking into that second myr retriever when you're at 1 life and watching your opponents reaction when you pull a game out of nowhere.
the best part of the combo is that you're never really losing until you hit 0 (or less)
